The very last thing we need is for the government to put more regulation on the Internet. The only thing that's kept their heavy hands from destroying things so far, is that they're also incompetent with technical issues.
The last thing the internet needs is "government regulation". If that were to happen, you could kiss everything you love about the internet goodbye. Governments do a horrible job regulating basically everything else other than critical, necessary services, and the jury is still out even on that one. Why would they suddenly do such a better job regulating something we're still all trying to figure out?
This might be naive, but.. Shouldnt the internet be as far removed from regulation as possible? This just opens the doors for more regulation by central authorities.
The Internet absolutely does need more regulation. I disagree in principle that regulation is bad, but I also think that simply saying "quit regulating" is myopic. Regulations exist, and refusing to touch them because we're afraid of "more regulation" just leaves them dysfunctional.
For example, right now due to the lack of clear regulations concerning digital storage, a lot of law enforcement agencies believe that they can legally access people's personal email without a warrant. This should be corrected with a clear law that says you need a warrant, since the 4th amendment's talk of being secure in "papers" is too vague.
There's good regulation and bad regulation. "Less regulation" is a good sound byte, not a good strategy.
Yeah, beacause what we need is for government bureaucrats to make more rules, particularly regarding anything relating to the Internet.
I'll phone my representative, maybe he can sneak this in as a rider to a 2,000 page bill about abortion or gay marriage or funding the terrorists in Syria that nobody read.
This is one of the reasons I don't want the government to increase the control over the internet. We sometimes get the illusion that it's all pure and butterflies, when in fact even whitehats/government agencies conduct illegal activities on the web abusing their powers. Better leave it to the people; we can handle it just the way it is.
The internet was fine before adtech and data hoarders. I don't know why you think this is the fault of the government. New things pop up and we need regulations to protect citizens.
It's a mad rush to hamper the internet with a continuous stream of horribly broken and harmful regulations. I don't see much hope for the future of a free and open Internet.
At this point we need more techies who are willing to go into politics. Before, everything could be solved with technology and nobody really understood how to enforce things. Now everything is becoming centralized and the people in power (politicians and big companies) are dictating the rights we have on the internet.
Internet rights are important. The internet is a part of so many of the things that we do in real life that it is inexcusable to continue to treat it differently. Smart phones know where we are and who we talk to; the internet of things may someday take hold and keep track of everything we do and when we do it; AI will be regulating more and more systems.
The people who use Facebook and turn a blind eye for the sake of convenient services don't care, but many of us do.
I don't understand how people can see the complete disgrace that is SOPA, NDAA, and the myriad of other broken laws and think that getting the government more involved in the internet is a good thing. Especially when the problem doesn't exist yet, this preemptive regulation is dangerous. Instead of advocating net neutrality, lets wait till these horrible abuses happen and then decide if we want the government involved.
