If you really want or need MagSafe, as I do, you can have it with USB-C only Macs too.
There are many magnetic adapters you can buy, the good ones working better than the original MagSafe 2, which easily fell off when using MacBooks on your Lap, due to the connector being T shaped (instead of MagSafe 1 being L shaped, which worked great).
I also hope they don‘t bring back SD card readers and big clunky HDMI ports into the MacBook lineup, potentially reducing the amount of USB-C ports and making some models thicker.
I can see that it's not a necessity for many people, but I still have a 2015 13" Macbook Pro with MagSafe in addition to a newer 15" Macbook Pro, and my experience using both every day is that I positively mourn the difference.
I'm shocked that Apple has not taken it upon themselves to ensure that there's a usable magnetic adapter for the USB-C port, under their brand or through a partner. I've tried a couple of third-party adapters that were utter failures. I hope somebody succeeds someday, preferably Apple or with Apple's blessing, because I would be very slow to try another third-party adapter otherwise.
At least for the magsafe thing you can buy USB-C magnetic adapters like the “CONMDEX USB C Magnetic Adapter”. Doesn’t address the other major shortcomings, but it’s a small win.
I'm so sad to see MagSafe was replaced with USB-C in the new MacBook. Hopefully they don't deprecate MagSafe for larger laptops. I won't mind USB-C + MagSafe charging capability though! ;)
Agreed on MagSafe + USB-C. What I find interesting is the interpretation of this bit:
- There will be additional I/O ports
I’m pretty sure that simply more USB-C ports also fits that description. I don’t know why someone would assume that means SD card slots are coming back. I don’t see a future where Apple has SD slots on notebooks.
Apple is pretty smart when adding features most of the time. Maybe they just add strips of magnets to a usb-c so you can still use the port with a normal usb-c cable and still benefit of magsafe with the proprietary adapter.
Anyway, I did enjoy MagSafe when it was there but I don't think Apple will go back. They'd rather focus on making sure you only have to charge your laptop at night.
I don't see how Magsafe and USB-C are mutually exclusive. Also, if Apple wanted to, they could have given their Magsafe adapters pluggable cords, so you don't have to buy a new adapter when the cord frays.
If someone is that concerned, Amazon is full of magnetic breakaway adapters for USB-C, bringing MagSafe into the USB-C era. I also mentioned the Surface, which uses a MagSafe-like connector.
I was worried about the loss of MagSafe too. Now, with almost three months with the new MacBook Pro, I have become very happy with USB-C, and I hope that iPhones and iPads will make the switch too. A USB-C-only world would make so many things easier!
I really liked MagSafe but the ability to plug my laptop in on either side and the ability to use whatever USB-C cable I want for charging kinda negates that. Besides, if I really want it that bad, I can get an adapter that adds MagSafe capabilities (although I don't know how great the adapters are; I just know they exist).
How would it make your life worse if in addition to the usb-c ports there was a sd card port and usb-a? Does switching away from magsafe make it more likely or less likely for the MacBook to get accidentally pulled to the floor?
I'm not saying that no one will find usb-c useful or that it works for no one's workflow.
I'm saying that going all usb-c doesn't provide much, if any benefit. They could've given you your usb-c ports and included the other ports.
If it works for you, great. The problem is that they could've made it work for a lot more people, but they chose not to in their Don Quixote-like chase for thinness and aesthetics.
Interoperability with every other hardware? Magsafe is only macbook, usb-c is non-Apple laptops, mobile phones, hearing aids, wireless headphones, etc.
And a large, ready to orther set of adapters to other standars. Magsafe doesn't have that yet, and judging from Magsafe 2, it almost won't have any.
