Agreed. I do hope they keep USB-C. The one cable that works for all was actually a convenience for me as I could charge a macbook, ipad, and even a samsung galaxy phone all with the same single cable.
I really hope they keep USB-C charging. It's my favourite thing because allows me use to use one cable with external monitors and be able to charge my laptop from both sides.
I agree and would love to have everything usb-c. But I’m skeptical that will happen, for one practical thing. Apparently not every usb-c cable is created equal and not every usb-c port is created equal either. (Remember that Nintendo device with an usb-c port that turned out not to comply to the spec?)
If every cable looks the same but one is suited for 240W of juice but doesn’t do data and the other vice versa, maybe we would be worse off…
I don't agree with the USB c story. To me it's extremely handy to have just usb c. All (most) devices work, can use the same cable for charging my phone. super convenient for me.
All I wanted from USB-C was a single charging cable for everything - phone, tablet, laptop, portable battery, headphones etc. I've got exactly that, and I'm using it plenty.
I'm honestly really happy with USB-C. My phone, laptop and tablet charge the same way. I bring one charger and two cables, so I can pack much lighter than before. Each device can serve as a power bank for the others. My monitor serves as a powered hub, so there's only one cable connecting everything to my laptop. I use the same charger for everything from my camping lantern to my computer. I don't have a big box of cables anymore, nor do I pack 5 different cables when I'm on the move. It's very convenient.
It only becomes a problem when I leave my bubble. I usually travel without my adapters, so I can't borrow someone's mouse, or plug something into their TV.
Then there's the issue with cables and chargers. I have thick cables and 100W chargers, so it's never a bother, but it's not a trivial thing for the average user to make sense of.
I wouldn't mind at all if it means I only have to carry ONE cable for all my devices or risk not using them/paying for a new cable. I got 4 devices, and 4 cables:
- Smartphone: USB-C
- Laptop: 12v barrel charger
- Kindle: micro USB
- GoPro 3: mini USB
My next laptop will be USB-C charging for sure, so at least the 2 items I use the most can share a charger.
Now I don't mind so much, but when I was travelling/nomad it'd have made my life way easier.
Honestly, I'm waiting for old USB(USB A, USB B) to be deprecated and USB C become the new universal USB. As in ATM machine, you get the drill. Current USB cable situation is a mess - my phone is USB C, but it came with a USB A to USB C cable. Good thing I can connect it to my 2017 MacbookPro using it's original USB C charging cable! However then I can't charge. Sometimes I use a USB C to female USB A dongle to use my phone's USB A male to USB C. And the whole thing has become expensive, good USB C cables seem to be made out of gold. Life would become so much easier if everything was USB C to USB C
Remember cell phones before Mini USB took over/was mandated by the EU? At many events there used to be booths that would make money by having every charger cable available to charge your phone.
It's great to have a unified connector for everything. My USB-C NexusX cable can charge my friends Macbook.
And eventually, hopefully, in a few years time, it will also mean that wherever you go for a presentation, a USB-C option will be available. There is a really good chance that this will eliminate a lot of duplicate cables and dongles.
USB-C is great, but honestly I'm not transmitting data via the port, nor do I care about charging speed. Then it becomes weird that I still have to carry a lightning cable for my Airpods.Would be a huge plus if I can just carry one cable while traveling someday.
And to be honest, I use my laptop for home and office work. It’s very nice to be able to have to just (un)plug one cable and have everything (charging, 4K100 video, keyboard, mouse, webcam) working.
If Apple would have killed charging via USB-C PD, it’d have been a big regression for me.
Same, USB-C is one of those things that for me just works.
I buy USB-PD chargers and cables from reputable brands, and everything just charges. When I use the cables for data transfer, it just works -- no muss or fuss like there were with some of the charge-only converter cables for charging micro-USB devices.
Now if I were using Thunderbolt 3, yeah, you need a higher-end cable and there are restrictions on cable length for speed purposes (or moving up to a more expensive active cable). But I think that's a fair trade-off for being able to use that same cable for everything else as well.
We cannot WAIT until our household says goodbye to the last couple devices with legacy ports and we can throw the last few converter dongles in a drawer. Looking at you, Apple and Amazon Kindle -- when are you going to get with the program and ditch your legacy Lightning and micro-USB ports respectively?
I'll be happy to carry just one charging cable for everything in my bag in a few years. Hopefully this gives Anker the chance to make One USB-C Cable To Replace Them All with gold connectors and 8 durability
Everyone here constantly complains about USB-C any time it comes up, but my experience has been that it's fucking awesome that so many of my devices have the same cable type: phone, tablet, laptops, USB battery packs, VR headset, Switch, Deck, various game controllers, various retro game handhelds, portable monitor, antigen COVID-19 detector, car battery starter, all kinds of stuff really.
And now that lightning is going the way of the dodo, soon I'll finally be able to consolidate to basically just the one cable type for trips.
I drank the USB-C kool-aid that Apple proposed but it just completely failed in practice. I now carry multiple different (and incompatible) USB-C cables which is in no way better than the magsafe + usb charger I had before.
Three years ago I had one USB-C charging brick with a lightning and USB-A cable and my macbook magsafe brick.
Now I carry a USB-C charging brick with a lightning cable for ipad and iphone, my USB-C charging brick for my macbook pro with a USB-C PD? cable, a USB-C -> USB-C cable for my external SSD (which I cannot use to charge my macbook and the charging cable of my macbook does not work with it). Additionally I have a USB-C to USB-A adapter with a USB mini cable for my headphones and mifi dongle and a separate adapter for HDMI and SD.
I ended up with more cables and I would be in that situation for at least two years more until the last mini USB devices are discarded. But even in that case I end up with multiple USB-C cables just because they are incompatible to each other.
All my chargers do charge all my stuff. But then of course my stuff consists of Google's Nexus 6P and 2015 Pixel LS - both of them bought in 2015, both have USB Type-C chargers and both chargers can charge both devices. Google has pioneered USB Type-C charging for over 2 years now, too bad that other brands have done little to follow it's example. I do not like Apple at all and I hear the new macbook is a bit of a joke, but one thing I approve of is all USB Type-C ports. It's time to switch and ditch the old Type-A. Most of the people who bitch that they need to carry a bunch of dongles around for a period of time are the same people who change their phones every couple of years of so spending more money than all of their old USB devices combined would cost. How about not carrying around several different proprietary charging bricks instead?
