If Alexei can accept that Crimea legitimately belongs to Russia now. I guess I can accept that he's been jailed for breaking the local laws of this same russia.
Are post WW2 borders sacred? Is Crimea, transferred by Soviet Russia to the Ukraine in 1954, sacred? It's called international law. Yes it should be sacred. Nothing you say justifies by any means Putin's aggression and war crimes. Putin is a thug. He is a mob boss. Ukraine will join the EU. Ukraine will join NATA. Ukraine's economy and culture will flourish while Russia will be a pariah until Putin dies of old age and a respectable and honourable leader takes his place.
FWIW the people of Crimea overwhelmingly support Russian occupation according to independent Pew surveys. Any sanctions only serve to punish Crimeans, presumably to appease the Ukraine government (which is just as corrupt as Russia).
If Crimea was unwillingly annexed by Russia, then the sanction is punishing the victim instead of the criminal. If Crimea people genuinely supported the unification with Russia and received sanction for that, then it is a blatant attack on Crimean people's freedom.
You say Russia invade Ukraine? Right to jail. You say Russia retreat from Ukraine? Also right to jail. You say Ukraine not part of Russia? Believe it or not, jail.
He paused after taking Crimea too. A pause is not stopping. He needs to be stopped. He's already responsible for the most significant war crimes of the century - the razing of Grozny and Aleppo and other cities in Syria and is currently doing the same to Ukraine.
The only thing that gives me hope in this situation are the strong sanctions enacted against Russia, which may result in regime change (but will cause a lot of pain to ordinary people before they do so).
I really, really hope this is true. Hilarious, aside from the deaths at least. Putin should just pack up and go home, optionally seizing Crimea along the way.
