The competition is already pretty much extinguished.

What was the competition that was run out of business?

This seems like a signal that it’s the beginning of the end. We all knew popularity would be their demise.

Hopefully a competitor will start up and attract less attention for a while until we have to do it all over again.

Yes, it's sad. Even more so since there is not even a potential competitor in sight.

I was about to say the same thing -- glad to see I'm not the only one who recognizes the real reason why there will be no more competition in this space.

Just about any time a competitive product is swallowed up by a large company that product is left to wither for a year or so before riding off into the sunset.

It is so annoying- imagine we had no serious competitor. now we are left with just a single serious alternative. Hundreds of man years wasted for what exactly?

I guess that means innovation ends now too.

Dunno about going out of business, but there's been a major decrease in competition in the HD industry due to companies merging or discontinuing entire product segments.

They have two dying products and nothing in the pipeline. Basically it’s over.

Everything ends. Given how fast these companies rise up, I expect they'll be replaced just as quickly. For instance: myspace.

those companies will be replaced by Chinese equivalents before the sun goes down.

I might say, their window to dominate the world is closing. It's a long way from closed, though.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. These companies will soon be out of business.

Over that long, most of the industry should disappear through attrition alone.

If I had to pick a single product that I thought could upend an entrenched competitor, this was it. Congrats to everyone who benefitted, but it's a bit of a letdown to see them go this route and give up the opportunity to build a lasting company.

That kills the brand.

JSF programs killed competiton, there's nothing else that can compete for 20-30 years assuming current non US 4.5/5th gen programs deliver.

and its demise

It's evolution. Survival of the fittest, quite simply. The weakest are taken down, leaving more customers for the remaining, stronger competitors.
