Okay. I’d prefer you discuss whether my comments are representative of HN’s decline elsewhere. I’m not qualified to judge that.

Thank you for your thourogh explanation. My question was indeed sincere in that I wanted to understand how you perceive the decline. And, your statement makes sense to me. I think HN is becoming much more mainstream these days. It’s growing out of its niche is my feeling. That is probably driving “the decline”. I don’t know whether this is a good or a bad thing. Maybe, however, the development makes a good case for an HN alternative once enough people think the way you do.

Thoughtful answer, thank you. People complain about HN having gone downhill...but answers like this one still pop up fairly frequently.

I know that a reply like this can come across as dismissive, but you have to understand that people have literally been saying that the quality of HN has been falling since shortly after HN started 15 years ago. There's a strong bias (if not several biases combining) to feel like it's always getting worse. Since people are saying this all the time, it's hard to give much weight to a bare statement along those lines. Positive generalizations aren't that different, btw. The main thing I've learned is that everybody overgeneralizes and we're most likely hard-wired for it.

Because of that, specific examples actually carry more weight. The case you're describing sounds like someone it is really bad for HN to lose. But I'd need to see links.

Thank you for entertaining my arguments. I like that we have a lot of different people with different backgrounds, experiences, and opinions on HN which we can share with each other. I'm not much interested in continuing the discussion anymore but I do feel as if you have opened my mind a bit.

Making generalizations about HN like this without backing data to support it is unwarranted. There are plenty of diverse views, many of which do not fit nicely in the box you've constructed.

There are valid points to be made about HN being a bit of a bubble but I'm pretty comfortable pointing out that this is a forum for intellectual honesty and you're really showing none of that. These are tired arguments (ramblings really), to the point where I'm almost convinced you're trolling.

Do you have any statistics to show the division of HN before and after posts like this? If you don't, then clearly you're wrong about this, and everything else you have ever said.

That is not a rare opinion on HN.

I responded to a person who said that usually HN would cry about regulations... which is a viewpoint I have seen diminish over the last years in popularity and offered an explanation why that may be the case.

Thanks for chiming in, I always value your input, and my disposition is usually in sync with your views. I suppose that I don't actually see you as a contrarian - your views just often run counter to the more popular opinions on HN.

Please don't make up generalizations about HN to score rhetorical points. Unless you have real data to support them, such points tend to be dominated by bias and unsubstantive.

HN isn't particularly diverse in its negativity.

Why do you mention HN at all? Doesn't seem relevant. It's just a place where people come to disagree.

I think this comment won't go down well with the HN crowd, although I think that from a simple factual perspective you are quite right.

It might be just my perception based on past discussions on HN.

With all due respect your responses are incredibly condescending. I believe my point stands. If you disagree, I suggest that you propose a concrete model which would refute my thesis. I don’t know who you are to speak for the “HN community”.

I take issue with that statement, I think this is very representative of HN.

i've noticed that your observations are true increasingly often the last year or so, in contrast to years earlier on HN. it's very disappointing.

Everyone has biases about all kinds of things. Perhaps you take your comments on HN too seriously.
