Yes, but there isn't billions in commerce each day, at least not now.

Big Commerce?

Selling stuff is probably sufficient but not necessary to qualify as commerce.

There doesn't have to be the same number of buyers and sellers, does there?

One million people could buy/sell, while one person or entity took the other side of all the trades. So your statement in the strictest sense could be false.

Yes and no.

There is a rather large market for the machines people do business with.

So "commerce" takes place even when you don't buy or sell anything? Is that what you're saying?

That’s true, I mean more for transactions on e.g. Craigslist or a farmers market.

there sure is. but the marketplaces are so slow and fragile it's essentially impossible (aka too indeterministic/risky)

Commerce only happens when people buy things they want.

Definitely important. A merchant could be an anti-government bead jewelry maker doing $75 a month, or Microsoft. They each count one.

I think the merchants are the bottleneck in this case

No...that's the marketplace.

Yes, this is true - but we are looking at a very specific case here: Sold, and my understanding is that there marketplace never really took off. That means it is doubtful there are people depending on Sold as a means of support.

I've been told that it isn't a marketplace unless there's a financial transaction facilitated by it. However, I don't agree.

There is. It’s called a monopsony, a market where there is only one buyer.

haha I had the same thought when I saw the title, 'wait, that's just regular commerce right?'

For sure, and that’s the “medium of exchange” aspect of it. But it’s still not the best store of value…

Sure, but they all still trade in one big GOOG pile.

Or transacting for goods and services. You know, like in an economy. I just bought coffee with it.

I'm talking about the goods or services that are sold.
