There are people in that category. But do you think Kazuo Ishiguro is one of them?

It's just...jarring to read the OP. It reads (to me) like "the right-wing does this all the time...now it's our turn!"

sort by: page size:

Normally not. But this particular author is not just “right”, but far-right. This context is highly relevant when critiquing it’s context.

Not just right-wingers.

What does the American right-wing have to do with this at all?

If anything I'd think its the opposite, there's a frequent stereotype about right-wing extremists having anime profile pictures.

And honestly, most of the right-wing people I know IRL are also into anime (though so are the left-wing people I know, so I don't think its really indicative of anything)

"The right is on the rise"

So now "The right" means racist?

Just because these horrible people fall into the general category of the right, I don't think it's fair to paint this as typical of people who also fall on the right. Some of us just want small government and have conservative social views. But are just as revolted by the Holocaust deniers as any one else.

the author is obviously on the far left

By "right-wing" he means the particularly virulent ur-fascist type of characters.

If you don't think that is a problem then... well, I can't help you.

Yes. My mistake.

I’m surprised people are low key defending these groups, even people on the right. This isn’t conservatism. It’s totalitarianism backed by new age woo.

I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised. Totalitarianism is back in fashion lately. Feels like we want to LARP the early 20th century.

That's a common stance in right-leaning circles, unfortunately.

Since you seem to ve an expert on this kind of stuff, does the far left read the far right ever? If so, which authors?

The world is a large place. With 7.8 billion people in the world today there is bound to be 1 or 2 who go off the deep end. To say those represent the majority is insulting. It's like you're saying, "You wouldn’t know it about the US right wing by reading their periodicals: antisemitic, pro-fascist, anti humans rights, pro totalitarian, and more."

Yes.

I'm a right wing heretic who has been doing that sort of thing here since 2019.

> hackernews is full of right wing types

Calling people "right wing" just because they do not agree with a given narrative is one of the motors behind the polarisation of society. Just because someone acknowledges the veracity of the (small-s) science of biology and thus recognises the fact that sexually reproducing mammals like us come in two sexes [1] does not mean they are 'right wing´, they could be social democrats or communists and still realise this to be the case. Just because people see the race-baiting profiteers who make a living pushing 'critical race theory' for what they are does not make them 'right wing', there are plenty of liberals who recognise Robin diAngelo and Ibram Henry Rogers (who calls himself 'Ibram X Kendy' nowadays) for the frauds they are.

The word 'right wing' does not mean 'evil' or 'wrong' nor does 'left wing' mean 'good' or 'right'. These terms have meanings which are not at all related to 'wrong', 'right', 'good' or 'bad'. They are also rather imprecise indicators of a person's political leanings since many people do not fit neatly into a 'left' or ´right' shaped box.

[1] yes, yes, yes, except for the 0.18% who suffer from intersex conditions

Think there's a bit of suborning when it comes to the right-wing ones too.

Viewing society the way most people in the world view it makes me “right wing?” It’s not the first time I’ve heard that. I’ve heard Americans on the left say that the Japanese are “bigots” for not wanting immigrants. I don’t think they understand how radical that is.

Maybe Bangladeshis (and Japanese and Chinese and Arabs and most everyone else) are “right wing.” Or maybe some folks mostly in a few western countries have adopted a radical preoccupation with minorities, to the point that they deny the right of majorities to structure their society as they see fit according to their culture and values.

No? Maybe you are projecting but not everyone is that way.

It’s just a far-left claiming everyone else is right-wing. It’s a common thing in their group.

Are they though? Maybe I just lack some knowledge but it seems there's a trend where these definitions are shifting so that right become far right, and sometimes even people who would have been left are suddenly being called right.

That said I don't know much about these particular people.

I don't know. I think this[0] qualifies as far-left tactics.

Its kind of telling that the right wing is embracing alt right nazi and other people calling for violence and genocide as 'right wing'.
