I checked the Google Photos app and opened my account settings. According to the information in the app, free & unlimited storage of photos in "high" (not original) quality will still be available for me after June 1st 2021. But uploads from other devices will count toward the available space quota.
So Google Photos works as always on the Google Pixel 3a.
This is a great point. My wife and I were attracted to the Google Pixel lineup because they advertised unlimited original quality photo storage through Google Photos. Well they reduced that to just unlimited "high quality" a year or so ago, and I broke my 3A a few months ago. Silly me forgets that newer Google Pixels don't have unlimited photo storage at all, I buy a 5A, and all photos/videos get uploaded to Google Photos and count against my quota. Even though Google technically isn't in the wrong here, I've always felt like I got a rug pull.
Google offers both options, though? It used to offer free - unlimited "high quality" photos, which they have now stopped (Still available to Pixels (till P4) for 3 years since the respective phone was launched)
You can choose to pay for storage and keep original quality uploads?
Well, Apple gives you 5GB of photo storage and only for Apple devices. Google was giving unlimited storage for any devices, including Apple’s.
It is only fair that in future they will give that perk only to Google device users:
> As a side note, Pixel owners will still be able to upload high-quality (not original) photos for free after June 1st without those images counting against their cap. It’s not as good as the Pixel’s original deal of getting unlimited original quality, but it’s a small bonus for the few people who buy Google’s devices.
Among big players I believe Amazon still offers unlimited high-quality photo storage.
The Pixels get 3 years of free full quality photo uploads and after the 3 years, any new photos uploaded from the phone are compressed. Existing photos do not get downgraded.
What? Google Photos has two storage settings: "High quality" and "Original quality". High quality includes unlimited photo and video storage for photos up to 16 megapixels and videos up to 1080p resolution.
The "High quality" is free and I am totally happy with it. Never even seen a 16 megapixel camera and most of my videos are of VHS-quality.
I bought a Pixel 1 and never got the free storage of raw photos. Eventually had to export everything to dropbox and convert everything to lower quality within photos. There is no way to fix this.
Google Photos storage is unlimited at a reduced/optimized resolution. If you want to maintain the original raw resolution, it uses your Google Drive Storage for that. If you decide to get a Google Pixel phone, they give you the unlimited raw format storage.
Wow! I've recently uploaded all my old photos to Google photos to take advantage of the free offering. I guess I should prepare myself for the time they start charging for it.
