Time to ditch the term “autopilot”, eh?

Then don't call it autopilot

Autopilot is currently an aspirational name. Perhaps the name should be changed.

It's almost as if calling it "autopilot" was wildly irresponsible.

Or even worse: "Autopilot".

Autopilot is the correct term here – seems like most folks unfortunately don't know what it actually means. So I wouldn't disagree with you.

Unfortunately, it's probably down to the choice of name "Autopilot", that leads folk to make assumptions.

Nevertheless it's true. Autopilot as seen in countless movies now means "set it and forget it" to more people than a rudimentary aeronautical cruise control.

I think the argument against the term 'autopilot' is less about the technical accuracy, and more about the implication and assumptions of the layman. To most people, 'autopilot' suggest that they can be totally hands-off, which isn't true yet.

I think the problem is more to do with your erroneous definition of 'autopilot'

If anything this just cements why they shouldn't have called it autopilot in the first place.

Maybe they should have called it something other than "autopilot", then.

And this is why I don't think they should call it "autopilot". The name is misleading, imo

Okay, and? That's the point of autopilot.

Autopilot?

Autopilot?

That's just Autopilot

It's called Autopilot™.

Ah, but Autopilot is a software product whose marketing suggests it's possible to remove responsibility for driving a car from the driver.

I'd say that half of the issue is that even if the term is accurate, people hear the word autopilot and expect it to be a lot more than what it actually is.
