Undocumented immigrants definitionally are not Americans.

Undocumented?

Few of them are undocumented. There’s plenty of documentation on them - in schools, emergency rooms, police reports. As you well know, your term “undocumented” is designed to trivialize the border and deprecate the very concept of American citizenship.

At a minimum, refer to them as unauthorized immigrants, since that is the distinguishing factor from a public policy perspective.

>Law-abiding immigrants, documented or not...

"Undocumented" is a euphemism for illegal. These are not law-abiding people.

I think the US should have a more generous immigration policy and actually let people in to the society in an easier way.

However, isn't undocumented just another word for illegal? At least that is what it means in my country. If a person is breaking the law and is being in a country even if they're not allowed maybe they just have to suit themselves?

People can’t be illegal. They can be in the country without proper documentation. The _correct_ and _humane_ term is “undocumented”.

Seems like a poor substitution term. One can be undocumented without being an immigrant (legal or otherwise). Some of my family members have been in all three situations at different points in time.

The proper term is 'undocumented immigrant.' In this country all people (whether they are citizens or not) are given the benefit of due process and are innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone else get annoyed by term “undocumented”. There is all kinds of documentation on all immigrants, from facebook, google, the cell phone companies to the irs to the nsa. Some cities even have drivers licenses / id cards for “undocumented” immigrants. I’d prefer a term like non-visa holding non-citizen immigrants. But I guess that’s too long... undocumented it is...

Why are you calling them undocumented, and not illegal?

WTF. No they are not. Only US citizens are given Due Process. That does NOT extend to Illegals.

Undocumented immigrant is Not the proper definition. They came here illegally under their own free will. They broke the law and are NOT law abiding. Therefore, the proper term is illegal. Don't be stupid.

The large population of undocumented immigrants begs to differ.

He is not "undocumented", he is "illegal". Stop using the PC term.

Illegal immigrants are criminals by definition.

Not all immigrants are undocumented (what you call illegal).

The current US policy by this administration is causing even documented immigrants to reconsider or just give up and leave.

The US has extreme amounts of undocumented immigration that nobody really cares much about.

This whole thread has been about legal immigrants. You’re referring to undocumented immigrants.

According to an immigration lawyer I'm friends with, the better and more accurate term would be undocumented immigrants. Since, you know, their legal status isn't necessarily illegal/breaking the law, just that there is no paperwork for their presence.

The term "illegal immigrant" cannot be applied to people who immigrated legally using a law you don't like.

I'm a legal immigrant in the US. The presence of undocumented immigrants has zero negative effect on me.
