I'm sure SF is more expensive, not sure about Mountain View, Palo Alto, etc.

sort by: page size:

Oakland and East Bay are generally cheaper. The peninsula down to Palo Alto and Mountain View is just as expensive as the city.

Palo Alto is a lot more expensive than most of the Bay Area, so this is a somewhat cherry-picked result.

Palo Alto is particularly expensive because of how luxe the area is (from what I understand).

Sounds a little high, depending on age, but SF is likely more expensive.

The trope that SF is more expensive than the rest of the Bay Area isn’t even true, at least not anymore. I pay $1650 for a studio apartment in a decent neighborhood near a tech shuttle stop. That’s cheaper than Stanford’s student housing in Palo Alto.

The $1500 figure is actually quite low for SF. It is more inline with south bay actually.

Is LA really more expensive than SF?

We have generally found that San Francisco housing prices are lower than Silicon Valley. Cupertino, Mountain View, etc are absolutely insane.

Wow, I have never heard that SF is expensive. Thanks for letting us know this revelation.

No surprise that SF is the most expensive.

The Bay Area is really expensive too. Especially when it comes to housing.

Depends on the home. But I’m quiet confident that if you want a single family house, Palo Alto is much more than 100% more expensive.

you also have to factor in the fact that, as high as it is, housing cost in SF and in the Bay are still double digits percentage lower than NYC. Living in San José or Palo Alto is something like 30% less expensive then in NYC. That's big, considering you might be paying 35k a year for your housing.

SF is really, really expensive.

Then why is Palo Alto so expensive?

Yes you do - Palo Alto, Mountain View, Cupertino, and nearby peninsula cities are even more expensive than SF. At least in SF you can get a nice new construction apartment for 875k.

You can find a cheap house for $1.25M in San Mateo or on the outskirts of San Jose, but it’ll still be pretty small and far away.

Where on the Peninsula would you live that's substantially cheaper than SF? The area around Stanford is fairly pricey.

Um no. Mountain View is not the same price as SF. SF is far more expensive than Mountain View. My current apartment in Mountain View is on the order of 3x cheaper per square foot compared to when I lived in SF. When I was in SF, I was living around the tenderloin which is already cheaper than most "normal" places in SF.

My current apartment is only a few hundred feet from the Castro downtown and is around $1200 for a 1000sqft 2 bedroom apartment. I'd like to see someone find something like that in SF for the same price.

Hate to break it to you, but Berkeley is going to be more expensive to rent than SF.
