For anyone out of the loop, "Liberia Chat" has nothing to do with Liberia (the country).

Also, I found it amusing when I typed "freenode" into the search bar, "freenode drama" was the first suggested phrase.

To be precise: Freenode didn't, Libera Chat did.

Summary: Essentially this is an attempt of freenode.net to redirect people who type in libera.net instead of libera.chat. Libera.chat is a fork of freenode.net that formed in response to a controversial change in leadership in May 2021.

It's still there!

libera.chat has pretty much all the original community. Just the name "freenode" has been hijacked.

Even freenode is no longer good. At least it had to be renamed libera chat.

I'm never going to go on libera.chat... I use IRC networks, but I don't even use Freenode.

Libera.chat is actually an awful name, but I still embrace the change and have already bid Freenode a permanent farewell.

Come on, we both know those topics mentioning libera.chat were "Go to Libera.chat instead! Our channel is now there. Details are..."

If you posted hundreds of messages on this site saying go to lobste.rs then you would get banned. If you posted one I doubt anything happen because that is fair. But lets also add in the fact that libera.chat went around bad mouthing the hell out of freenode and are now crying that freenode won't let them advertise their new network on their network.

Liberia still kickin it. RIP freenode.

Off to Libera, the new home of the freenode community.

Notice that in some cases, channels were banned for merely advertising that they also run a channel on libera.chat. Not that they are moving to libera.chat, that they ALSO run a channel there. It's a very basic attempt at suppressing people wanting to leave and trying to convince others.

And you're correct, there is no point to freenode existing.

Libera Chat is a fork of Freenode. The later still exist, but all communities I know moved to Libera.

Not that I disagree, but doesn't sound like that's the issue here? The issue is that there's been a hostile takeover of freenode.net so the admins have established an network on a new domain for its communities to migrate to, libera.chat.

what happened on freenode recently? I see everyone leaving for libera.chat

Try libera.chat. It's supposedly the successor to Freenode.

We are on libera.chat,as ##infra-talk - just like on freenode.

Freenode's management changed. Libera.Chat is a new organization with new servers not associated with Freenode -- but many organizations that had previously maintained IRC channels on Freenode are moving to Libera.Chat.

Not renamed, but a number of Freenode channels and admins moved to libera.chat recently due to non-technical IRC drama / politics over "ownership".

Thankfully, the open protocol means it's just a one-line change to move over to irc.libera.chat , run by the same people as ran freenode until last week, carrying on in the same spirit.

That's not an accurate representation of the freenode situation: freenode was taken over, the old staff disagreed with the decisions of the new owner and left to create Libera.Chat, and then the new ownership started banning people and taking over channels for talking about Libera, changed the server software, effectively deleted the nickname database, and is producing really delusional messaging, such as https://freenode.com/news/introducing-irc .
