I'm surprised to see this reaction from a sales person, isn't this a major part of your job?

That's not how sales reps think.

lol, I normally am very empathetic to sales people, I feel like they do a difficult, soul sucking job. But in this case, I agree and wish I just told the rep to bugger off.

Hopefully it stands out because of the fact that most people don't say shit like this? I don't know, I've only ever heard a sales dude say anything like this, and he was fired pretty soon after for harassing people.

But even sales guys normally do not behave that way.

Salesperson's job is to listen. It's like a programmer having trouble reading and applying basic documentation. Huge red flag.

I don't know what you are on about, I assume you haven't worked in sales, but I have and I have done this pleanty and the conversation goes like this:

Boss: did you make a sale?

Me: Yes

Boss: good job

Im sorry but if you work in sales and your boss gets upset at returns your boss is new to sales.

Should it be a surprise that a salesperson writes a post extolling salespeople?

That's not how salespeople work...

It's supposed to be because the company is doing it for their benefit. He's demonstrating being a salesperson as he describes it. ;)

In my experience I've felt that sales people tend to act like vendors in your anecdote, just within a single company.

Is that really something you experienced? That didn’t ever happen to me. If a salesperson treated me like that I would pretty much immediately lose all respect for them.

> Having a salesperson in the room means bringing in a bullshit meter. The sales rep is the one who is going to say, “I know you’re excited that this product was built on/with such-and-such, but so what? That’s not going to excite my customers. How is this differentiated from everything else out there?” They’ll ask the hard questions.

I've also seen the opposite even more - bringing in (average or lower) salespeople usually adds to the bullshit.

Pretty much. The same people who see salespeople as overpaid schmoozers and order-takers (some are, many aren't) would be utterly horrified at the thought they themselves could be fired without a second thought because of an organizational change or budget cut at a key account.

lol

you havent worked in sales.

It's quite common in sales.

> Sales is a communication-heavy job.

I think this is the issue in a nutshell. And as a salesperson, you don't get to define the method by which customers want to interact with you.

They're the ones with the money. You're the one trying to get the money. They get to have you meet them where they prefer.

And it's behavior like this that gives salespeople such a negative reputation in popular culture.

It tells me the leadership of those companies don't understand sales performance. :)

Sales people have the greatest jobs really! They either perform or they don't.. Its easy to measure and easier to take action.

He is a salesman, its part of the job.
