Will you expand on the comparison to half a century ago?

sort by: page size:

My comparison period was 1900 to 1920.

What happened half a century ago?

I think you mean “half a century ago”.

Half a decade? Or half a century?

1901~2000? Does this comparison make sense?

And we did, half a century earlier!

Quite so. The differences between 2000 and 1912 are hard to truely fathom. I don't know how you could possibly attempt to predict at that sort of timescale. Even a decade would be pushing it as far as I am concerned.

I'm not sure that is objectively true. This is worth a watch to compare the first half of the 20th century with the time since: https://vimeo.com/128373915

Sure... but do you think it really makes sense to compare today to 1760 or 1860?

Ask someone from a hundred years ago how it's going today and you'll have your answer.

Collectively, as a society, compared to that of, say, 1914.

It may not be as good as it was 50 years ago, but there's a case to be made that it's nearly as good as it ever was prior to 1900.

I think 100 years ago the metrics for good vs bad would have been different, fwiw.

I think in terms of change, not all centuries are created equal. All things considered, I think the century from 1870-1970 saw more rapid change than any other in history (including 1920-2020). Planet money did a piece the other week about this idea and how economic growth seems to have slowed down never to return to its 20th century levels.

If this idea is true, those in the 1920s share more with us (familiarity with cars, mass media, urbanization) than those just 50 years prior.

Really? This century like within the succeeding hundred years or that century like the 20th Century? I'd be curious to learn more.

So like … better than a hundred years ago?

Yes, but grand parent said it's all going in the same direction. Ie 18th century was better than 19th century was better than 20th century.

Is it different today from 50 or 100 years ago? Doesn't seem so different to me.

You are talking about things that happened 90 years ago compared to things that happened 15 years ago.
