My original account on HN is over 1500 days old now. I left that and used another which is about 800 days old for awhile. Now I'm shii and a few other people for a little while longer.
I signed up for HN over 2 years ago, made one post, then promptly forgot my login. I've tried on a few occasions to remember, but this is the incentive I needed to finally figure it out - thanks.
(Off-topic: why did you change your HN account? Both your profiles link to your websites that feature the same name (so if it was for a privacy reason, you might do well to clean out your old profile), and you didn't take time off between your last post on your previous account and your first post on your new account. I only noticed because you are a frequent and recognizable commenter here on HN.)
Just curious, are you the regular "geezer" who stopped posting a couple years ago, and if so why the new account? If not, and just a lurker who finally created an account to comment with, welcome to hn!
Im such a user. Sometimes I feel the urge to comment, but it happens so rarely that I won't recall my username or password. So I probably have 20 accounts on HN and 40 on Reddit, each with just a few posts.
Interesting because in the original post, he declares his resolve to quit HN and declares that he's not visited it in one whole month. "Yeah, right", I thought, and indeed in the intervening 3 years, he came back.
I'd wager most of us have needed a break at some point. I myself have gone through at least 4 accounts since 2006. I periodically "delete" them by setting minaway to 999999999. The act of starting over with a new account with zero fake internet points does help keep their value in perspective, though.
