It’s not an issue to the animals. They aren’t made aware of their impending death and made to ponder what more of a life they could have lived. From their perspective they are alive and then suddenly, not.
Killing an animal quickly and efficiently is generally held to be more "humane" than torturing it endlessly (and keeping it alive). It's the reason people put sickly pets down, rather than letting them suffer for months.
It's a pure utilitarian calculation. These animals are better off dead than alive. There isn't the natural habitat, or resources to care for them. Better to end their suffering quickly and painlessly.
Animals die violently regardless of human actions. If you want to prevent violent, painful deaths, you should be going around the forest euthanizing animals.
The thing is though, animals die anyway. And it's not like they die peacefully in their sleep, either. They mostly either get injured or old and starve to death, or get eaten by predators.
As much as I dislike this practice, I can at least partially defend it by being as close to instant as possible. It does not make it any less upsetting, but, sadly, some animals suffer worse fates.
Well, at least most animals don't try killing themselves, regardless of how bad their quality of life is, so they seem to prefer existence to quality of life.
