There's also pico2wave (libttspico), which, to me, with the "-l=en-GB" flag, sounds the best by far of any offline TTS that I've tried.

You can hear it in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfcme7maygw&t=131s

The TTS is pretty solid, what did you use for that? Amazon Polly is the best options I know of personally, but I'd love to know what you use because it's pretty solid.

There was a similar device I tried to buy last year but they went out of stock before I found them.

Any of these with voice control? Preferably without internet connection.

i know TTS play.ht uses amazon molly but commercial usage cost 49 USD.

I absolutely hadn't but that looks damn interesting, thanks!

What was the delay like in actual usage?

EDIT: This is literally what I was describing and have wanted for ages, US only but some ebay.co.uk vendors have them! I'm having one of these soon!

Anything in the Owon HDS handheld series. I like mine a lot.

It even has some Github work I believe, for USB control, so there's a possibility of some open PC software if someone wants to work on that.

I do wish it had FFT. But I can live without it for the size.

The Xiao BLE nRF52840 might be worth a look.

Or one of the Nitrokeys, which are generally more affordable and have open source firmware:

I (and a number of people I know) have a CalDigit TS3+ and it's worked extremely well for me: https://www.caldigit.com/ts3-plus

I can't speak to what else is on the market, but there's not more I'd want from this.

Where can you get/make one with decent audio quality and stable frequency?

The HiFive Unmatched[0] from SiFive might be what you're looking for, but it seems to be discontinued.[a]

[a]: Their website implies that it's available, but the linked websites to purchase from show it as unavailable.

I have a ttgo t5: http://www.lilygo.cn/prod_view.aspx?TypeId=50031&Id=1149&FId...

Seems to match what you are looking for, with an esp32, an e-ink display and a battery connection. It is also quite cheap. I use mine as a weather station.

I have good results with cheap ublox 6m's and 7m's from aliexpress. For some reason the 8m's I got were poor in sensitivity.

Adfruit ones also work great, but are a lot mor expensive, I do have several though.

PPS is criticial to proper timing. However... I was using the time synched systems for sound localization. But as they only cost around 7 euros on aliexpress, why not.

Take a look at http://www.sonetel.com, they are cheaper than many other options and also available internationally.

I have one of these and have been very impressed with the output.

It was ~$50.

There are several commercial devices, though I don't know if they have the performance you are looking for

Just took a look, their lower-quality model is almost exactly the same price as Azure TTS, and the quality is similar. Thanks for the pointer.

I'm in the market for alternatives. What equivalent devices are both cheaper and more open? I haven't found any. :(

Interesting, maybe this: https://www.timekettle.co/en-es/products/wt2-edge-online-voi...

Has anyone got experience with such a product? If it works, I'll happy purchase but like most of us here I'm sure, I've been burned by expensive tech that doesn't follow through.
