Interesting. Is there any way I can volunteer my DNA for them to have a play with? I was on Ritalin all through school.

What happens if you submit someone elses DNA as yourself to these products?

This is why I would want to send in other people’s DNA to be tested and they send in mine (like a bitcoin mixer).

Is that really a thing now? Sounds like it would have the opposite of the intended effect on most people. How awkward.

"I don't really have much to offer, but this DNA surveillance company says I have great genes!"

Granted, it's not much, but I did this under an assumed name and declined to allow them to keep the sample. I think it's good that the DNA is being used for science, I just hope I can keep some privacy from it.

Remember that when you are giving your DNA to a company, you are also partly doing it for all your family members. Maybe talk about it with them before doing it, especially if it is just for fun.

I've heard that this company copyrights your DNA in case it has some useful attribute.

I gave my DNA to 23 and Me at the age of 19 or so. They won't dispose of the data. They say it's due to California law, which I'm sure is not untrue, but it feels like they're taking advantage of it.

Or I could get someone else's DNA tested without their permission.

Anyone who really wants my genetic data for nefarious purposes will probably be able to find a way to collect it.

Getting your DNA sequenced is a bit like letting an app have access to your contacts: in both, your choice has consequences for hundreds of other people. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like it’s possible to undo the effects of something your friends/family might have done :/

How would one poison pill genetic data to the point of it being worthless to associate with the individual?

Which is great for people that can't have or don't want to raise their own DNA. But there's no way I'm signing up for that. The fact is that DNA matters a lot, and the linkage between DNA and behavior is only just starting to be unraveled. Parenting matters a lot too, but it's not the whole picture.

Is it a personal health coach or simply another way to get people to give up their DNA to be used by drug companies and cops? Both are part of the agreement when you give them a sample and Glaxo just bought into this company.

Seems kind of scary to me. What happens if I'm denied insurance, or a job because of some risk factor I have. Or even my kids?

Or even discover a way to make an drug even more addictive.

They don't want you to test another person's DNA without that person's permission.

This could work as Tinder bio. It’s unethical to deprive future generations of my DNA.

Yeah... I kind of dont care? Use my DNA to do whatever good you can with it. I can see how someone could use this maliciously, but there are far simpler ways to mess with someone's life. 23andMe also has an opt out check box, right?

If your family sends in their DNA, they'll de-anonymize you, unfortunately.

The problem is that you’re not just selling your DNA. You’re selling the DNA of everyone in your entire family.

Do you have their consent? Because I’d be really, really pissed off if I found my sister or anytime in my family did this test.
