I use Android because of the walled-garden approach to data that Apple tries to funnel its users into. The privacy issues give me pause however.

I stick with Apple for the privacy. There are features on Android I wish to use, but I can’t bring myself to use an Android phone or putting the effort of cleaning it from all of Google’s trackers.

Over the years I've considered switching to Android a few times but Apple's really locking in as my preferred device from their privacy work.

Not sure this moves the needle with consumers but it does for me.

The only reason I recommend iPhones is Apple's stance on privacy.

Android is a privacy nightmare. I cannot in good conscience recommend it.

At the same time, Apple's walled garden increasingly feels like an uncomfortable jail I want to break out of.

IMO, the times I've tried Android it always ended up being a mistake to use something other than the Nexus and now Pixel. Android and privacy is whole other situation though.

I've settled on my iPhoneX for now.

I use an iPhone instead of an Android because I still get software updates for the iPhone 7 (2016).

If I didn't like the Apple ecosystem, lock-in and walled garden, I would use android.

The short life-time of Android phones & the app's questionable privacy policies are the 2 major reasons I'm sticking to iOS, even though I think Apple is a major asshole.

Android is an awesome OS, but the app store feels "unregulated" and I feel like I'm not in control who and what copies my data.

I really struggled with my most recent phone purchasing decision but ended up sticking with iOS because, despite how much I love the customizability of Android, I feel like the stance Apple has taken on privacy over the last few years is something I want to support.

I understand that for them it may just be a business decision and differentiator, but it is one that is important enough to me to keep me on their platform.

Same. I really want to switch to Android for various reasons but can't bring myself to give up Apple's core respect for privacy.

The only reason I have yet to move fully to Android is because right now, Android without Google is such a neutered experience that I don't see any reason to try.

I only have an iPhone because of Apple's privacy stance. I hate every other element of the company.

I'm really curious about Android as I've been an avid Apple iPhone user since iPhone first came out. Part of me wants to switch as I love what Google is doing, but I'm hesitant as I'm so entrenched in the Apple ecosystem.

Nope. I was android user for 13 years. Just bored of switching between multiple android phones and bought iPhone. Not that I particularly like it, but I appreciate some effort on Apple’s part for privacy and security.

The folks who choose iPhone in part because of a perception of relative privacy and respect for the user (like myself) will think twice.

My two concerns are that Android as an ecosystem is almost certainly still worse, and that the vast majority of users will not care.

I’m tempted to jailbreak my devices going forward, although I guess the folks at Apple would say that makes me a pedophile.

Edit: seeking recommendations for Android phones with strong performance and reasonable privacy protections. Ideally one that can be used without a Google account.

I was always using iPhones because I felt like Apple tries a bit harder to protect my data than Google with Android.

But for the future I probably need Android phones with custom ROMs. Without spyware.

That's it. I'm switching to iOS. Android is like child's play when it comes to privacy compared to the features introduced just in this version of iOS. I'm sure I'll hate the lack of customizability but at least the privacy features are solid.

I honestly hate Apple's locked down ecosystem and have bought Android consistently for the last 7+ years. I've considered getting an iPhone as my next phone because of privacy concerns. I'm leaning more towards not carrying a phone or carrying one with a removed sim though as the cell providers still sell my location data.

I switched (back) from Android to iPhone because of security settings. I found Android to be a nightmare. Compared that to iOS's ability to set per-application permissions and Apple's stated commitment to privacy and I'm not going back to Android any time soon.

Nor will I be upgrading my iPhone any time soon. I plug in the headphone jack in my car and have found no decent bluetooth receivers to replace that wired connection.

Just bought an iphone 12 a few years ago. Won't give that up. Probably will upgrade to a newer android brand next time, but not because of the privacy issues.

I prefer the iPhone, but am working with an Android application right now and therefore use an Android device.
