0% APR finance over 2 years in the UK, interesting. Never seen that before. Will definitely wait and see though, my Pixel 4 was terribly disappointing (woeful battery and tiny screen).
Hadn't noticed the expensive side. They typically got half off within a month or two of announce. Got my Pixel 4XL 128GB for under $500 because of the Google Fi deal.
I still have a pixel 1 from 4 years ago that I think just stopped getting major upgrades. Not great, but not bad. My samsung note 4 was around a year behind on updates, and felt very slow because of all the crapware. I switched to a nexus 5, with a much lower spec and it felt MUCH better. Even simple things like hitting the home button had much less lag.
I did end up installing Cyanogen on the Note 4 which made it feel quite a bit snappier.
I don't understand what opportunity was lost? They are still offering 0% financing which is still cheaper than Pixel Pass. On top when you add trade in, it's even cheaper. With Pixel Pass you cannot trade in.
I'm on it, giffgaff, won't go back to contracts now. It's 3gb data on the £10 one, although I never use it as all the updates and downloads happen on wifi. I used to sometimes get near the limit when I would use it to stream music on google play. I was on the £12 (4gb) for a while, it's really easy to switch whenever you want.
It's much cheaper to buy a phone outright and get a giffgaff sim. I was buying Nexuses, but the pixel seemed a ripoff so I haven't upgraded yet. And to be honest I'm not really seeing poor performance yet on the Nexus 5x. I had been thinking about a oneplus, but I see they've released a cheaper pixel now.
I've had my pixel 2 for almost four years and I'm still perfectly content with it. Google, however, stopped supporting it after 3 years. The 5 year support guarantee fairphone provides looks really appealing to me. The fact that it's user-serviceable is also a nice bonus.
For perspective, they could have asked each additional Pixel purchase $.50 from the starting price to support it for an additional 5 years. (also pixel 3 owner)
