It's infuriating. I had to sell my 2017 MBP and buy a 2018 model because I wasn't in a situation where I could afford to be without a machine for a week or more. Otherwise I'd still be happily using the original machine.
I was once a big evangelist for Apple laptops. Now I tell people to get something else unless they're absolutely tied to macOS. I'll definitely be taking a very hard look at other, non Apple options when this guy gives up the ghost.
I’m at the point where I still greatly prefer MacOS, but Windows hardware.
Unless things have changed dramatically, my 2017 MBP will be my last when it’s time for a replacement. Hundreds of dollars in add-ons to make it functional and a terrible keyboard are too much to live with.
I'm leaning in the same direction myself. My 2017 MBP Pro has been a disappointment. The touch bar is a nuisance. The excessively large trackpad leads to a lot of phantom taps, and I'm still using adapters to plug things into it.
Since I'm wrapping up the last of my iOS client work there's nothing really tying me to macOS any more and a PC seems to provide way more bang for the buck for the things I care about - Android Studio, VS Code, Ableton Live, ZBrush, and a bit of gaming here and there. Apple's hardware playbook for the last few years seems to consist entirely of making things thinner for thinness' sake and making piecewise upgrades harder and harder.
Maybe I will have no choice but to switch. In the meantime when my MacBook air died I opted to buy a used 2015 Pro instead. So they are indeed losing out on my money. I used to upgrade every two or three years. Its been 5 years since I bought apple hardware aside from some cables and chargers.
Yes and no. I bought a 2018 MBP to replace my 2016 MBP. After about a year I sold it (another nice feature of Apple stuff is that you can actually sell it for reasonable prices in my country), and I’m now back to using my 2016 MBP.
So it’s not just that everything else is worse, which I agree with, it’s also that Apple is getting worse.
Yeah, I don't want to switch for the same reasons, but this will be the first time I've actively resented buying a Mac. I've always understood that I'd pay premium prices for premium quality, but with the new MacBook Pro, I feel like my allegiance to MacOS is being exploited. They're simply too expensive, especially if, like me, you like in the U.K. or Europe.
I have the 15in MBP and wish I never did. I hate the keyboard and the touch bar and the fact that it seems like every app I like is moving to a subscription model. It is getting quite expensive using Apple anymore.
Pretty much same boat. I'm still on a pre-touchbar MB Pro, and it's hard to imagine any circumstances under which I'd buy another Apple machine (maybe if I needed to do native iOS work for some reason). I've held off buying another MB largely because switching habits/software to another OS always seems like something I'd like to shelve. I've managed to keep my current ageing machine viable by offloading increasing amounts of work to AWS, Linode, Raspberry Pis, etc. But this won't go on for ever, and Apple's current laptop line is completely irrelevant to me.
My Macbook Pro isn't even a year old yet, so I won't be replacing it any time soon. But hardware like this is finally competitive with Apple - I'd be taking a close look if I was in the market.
The fact that OS X has gotten worse and worse with every version makes me switching next time even more likely.
MBP price and some hardware issues are causing me to look for alternatives (dodgy keyboards, no non touch bar 15" that isn't gimped). I've been needing to upgrade for at least a year but I don't want to pay £2000 for a keyboard I hate and a touchbar I never want to use.
The possibility of using Windows has kept me from switching so far but I can put up with it for a user replaceable battery and a decent keyboard I think.
My employer has a shiny new 2017 MBP for me that I have yet to touch because there are SO MANY issues with both the hardware (the need for four different dongles and no escape key) to the security issues to the fact a lot of core software still doesn't work solidly. I'm sticking with the 2015 MBP they gave me before.
Apple hardware does suck (now) AND its over priced. The OS and apps are starting to suck too (IMHO). I switched a month ago from MBP. I commented elsewhere (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13318525) on this thread with more details and my reasons and new hardware specs.
When I realised I have to use my top end 2018 MBP with external keyboard only, I decided to spec out a new PC.
After being Mac exclusive since early 2000s, and having spent an ungodly amount of money on their gear over the years.
They have a problem, and my patience is gone. No interest in a new Mac, and I can see myself leaving their ecosystem entirely now that the macOS cord is cut.
Same here. My 2012 MBP has been upgraded with more RAM and a SSD and the battery is replaceable (but it's lasted better than my work 2017 model and is healthier!) but the cost of the new devices is so astronomical it'll be the last one I buy. Since I will have to invest in a new ARM device just to develop for their new platform, it's goodbye Mac and back to Linux (already got Windows as a side Dev machine).
I have the 2019 16" i9 mbp, and it's an absolute nightmare. I've been incredibly disappointed with Apple's handling of this machine. I want to get to the new Apple silicon, but gonna wait for the next release.
Honestly this whole situation is so frustrating as a user.
I now have a 2017 MBP and every day I try to hate it a little less but it's hard work. I miss the old keyboard. Touch Bar is gimmicky and I'd be happier without it. Only USB-C is idiotic. No more Magsafe stil kills me. The old trackpad was better.
For years I just wanted a better Macbook Air (ie upgraded display and specs). The 13" MBA was about perfect IMHO. Reasonably cheap and a great form factor. Yet even Apple succumbed to the fatal disease of "adding value" by changing a winning formula. Force Touch lack discovery and is terrible (this is particularly the case for the phones).
Sadly, the alternative (non-Apple laptops) is just so much worse. I have a Dell XPS 15 and it's fine I guess but it's STILL much worse than MBP/OSX.
I actually had to make the exact same jump a couple months ago. My 2013 MBP wasn't really slowing me down but I was giving it away to my family instead. I had a lot of hesitation when it came to touch bar but the that was way too much easier to get used to than what I thought.
The keyboard I'd say is a lot better than the 2018 versions. I've used a friends 2018 MBP where I had issue with repetitive keystrokes or no keystrokes at all, it's been two months I'm using mine and haven't had a single issue yet.
I think if you need it now you should go for it. There are always gonna be changes, updates, redesigns just like how it has been since 2013. If you're in need it of the tool now it's less like that the next update will have a meaningful impact on your work that's worth to wait.
