I say this as an Apple fan who uses almost exclusively their devices: iCloud is hot garbage. It mostly works if you stick to the default settings and use it for nothing but passive device-backup and photo-backup for a single iPhone. Anything outside of that is a mine-field of login errors, sync issues, totally unconsidered use-cases, functionality that's simply broken (not just under special conditions; flatly broken), etc.
Unfortunate, but perhaps a useful learning experience.
I disable iCloud on all of my Apple devices. Instead, I just make regular backups myself and tolerate different recent content on each device until synced with my Mac, which is backed up as well.
Well, you can choose not to use iCloud for that reason (as some of us do).
A bigger problem is that Apple deliberately locks up iDevices so it's hard to get your data off them using only local means, particularly if you don't also want to buy an Apple laptop just to do it.
