Given you like survival stories, I'm guessing you've also read Unbroken. But on the off chance you haven't, definitely check it out!

“Unbroken” was an incredible read that got into this too.

One of the most astonishing books I've ever read is Unbroken, which is the true story of an American pilot (and Olympic athlete) who went through a similar experience as a POW of the Japanese. Well worth checking out.

You've likely already read it at this point, but "Endurance: Shackletons Incredible Voyage" by Lansing is an amazing survival story.

Read (or listen to) Endurance by Alfred Lansing.

It's truly a great story.

If you enjoy tales of survival against the odds, I highly recommend Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales [1]

It recounts multiple amazing tales of survival against the odds, then goes into the psychology of what's needed to survive such a situation. Finally, it lists the top 10 traits exhibited by survivors of these kinds of situations.

If you are interested in stories like this, and how people make life or death decisions in difficult situations, I recommend Laurence Gonzales's book Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why.

Just finished reading “Endurance” for the first time. If this is appealing to you Id highly suggest grabbing a copy.

"Alfred Lansing's Endurance"

Just an incredible book. If you have any interest in survival stories this is an absolute must read.

The book 'Endurance', written from interviews with the survivors, is absolutely gripping. My partner and I read the whole thing out loud over the course of about a week - like binge watching a series.

Lost in Shangri-la is good (read it last year, there's video from the rescue mission on YouTube if you search for it), also good:

- Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World

- Escape From The Deep: The Epic Story of a Legendary Submarine and Her Courageous Crew

- Ruthless River: Love and Survival by Raft on the Amazon's Relentless Madre de Dios (not as good but still worth reading).

I enjoyed “Endurance” by Alfred Lansing, and would recommend it if anyone wants to read a riveting and mostly accurate account of Shackleton’s famous voyage.

Considering that both of you are who you are, I recommend "A miracle in the Andes".

Thanks for recommending "438 days" - I'm adding it to my list. And yes, I really enjoyed "Unbroken".

A gripping book along the same lines is "Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042JSNQI/

Have you read Facing Fearful Odds? It was recommended to me by one of the marines who survived.

Adrift by Steven Callahan. It’s an account of a sailor whose ship sank and left him adrift for 76 days. I find it it both grounding and life-affirming. It has also taught me some lessons that I have never forgotten since. For instance that one never gives 100% as long as there is still hope that someone else is going to come and save you.

If you enjoyed that you've probably also read "Touching The Void".

IMHO the ultimate tale of high mountain survival: http://books.google.com.au/books?id=KnRdFe5TXVkC

I gave my father Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Horrors of war and the triumph of the human spirit. What a story, what a life!

I can highly recommend the book "Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage" by Alfred Lansing.

"Endurance" is another one well worth reading.
