AoE4 is a refinement of AoE2. Frostgiant is planning to release a beta of the Starcraft spiritual successor next summer. Immortal: Gates of Pyre is in alpha
Age of Empires 4 is not the same as Age of Empires Online and is a a full fledged game in the Age of Empires Series incredibly similar to AOE2 with some learnings from AOE3 added in.[1] It very much plays like it’s predecessors. It is highly enjoyable and has a very active community as responsive developers. There are many content creators and tournaments for this game now. It has a large enough userbase for you to be able to find a game quickly and they are constantly releasing new content and patches. The latest patch was released quite recently.[2]
AOE2, 3 and 4 have lots of tournaments, some of them with quite decent prize pools.[3]
I personally don’t play AOM so I can’t comment on that but as far as I have seen, Microsoft has done a good job at reviving the other games and with the new game so while I don’t doubt AOM is buggy I do have faith they are actively attempting to fix issues.
As for the Windows only thing, as I said, I use windows at times myself and I don’t mind paying for proprietary software. But I understand if others have qualms about that.
But to say that the Age of Empires series died with AOE3 is untrue, and while 0AD is a great achievement, to say it is a replacement for the actual Age games is also not true.
Also note that MS did reimplement the engine for the AOEI definitive edition, unsure about the others.
I would really like to see this for Age of Empires II. I think AOE has far more races and is a far more complex game ( although I'm biased because I haven't played SC2 as much as AOEII ).
I've been waiting for a game similar to Age of Empires to come but this just completely destroys Age of Empires, Thanks for this awesome game I will support.
It will be full of trading cards, real money micro transactions, Pay 2 Win multiplayer, grinding gameplay, no single player random skirmish maps against offline AI bots, no base building, WinFxckingStore-only and delayed, made by the guys who wasted HaloWars 2, who had no prior RTS experience.
All we wanted was a real-time-strategy (RTS) Age of Empires 4 with no bxllshit (like AoE1/2/Mythology), developed for Win7+ with no compromises whatsoever and port it to consoles later. M$ won't deliver it, rest assure.

If the space themes & generic strategy are more important to you, then check you the XCOM games.
If you want a brutally competitive game maintained by a passionate developer, an active community and has long term support then try Dota 2. (warning - it will consume your life)
If you just wanna build, then city skylines and it's amazing DLCs will keep you busy.
Empire Earth 4 would be nice. I always enjoyed empire earth 1 and 2 more than Age of Empires - not sure why exactly.. maybe the speed was a little slower, maybe AoE did not have religious takeovers and empire earth did?
Maybe it was getting super effecient with just a few keyboard shortcuts to select all X on the screen and things like that.
Maybe it's because I enjoyed populus on the Amiga..
but any way - it was fun to play single player vs computer and fun to play against other humans. Can't recall if we ever did LAN playing or not, but should.
I would buy copies if it was out today and try to get others to play it as well.
I would love to have age of empires 2 but with an mmo sized map. And thousands of players at the same time. Don’t ask me how you would actually win, but I like the idea.
Ensemble Studios, makers of Age of Empires, Age of Empires 2, and Age of Mythology, some of the best RTSs ever made. There are other great RTSs, but they're all great in different ways from the Age series, which nothing else resembles.
Microsoft bought them, and shut them down not long after for insufficient profits. Sigh.
Age of Empires IV is being made now since they noticed there's demand, but the studio they chose is a well-known clown collective. Hopes are not high.
