Sometimes. But, in my experience a lot of these advanced development environments can be quite hang-ey if you know what I mean. It’s quite lightweight relatively speaking so more than makes up for it.
What does development mean to you? Working on stuff that lives in the cloud? I think you may be taking a very limited view of what people need from their work machines.
I call myself a developer but I often work on stuff where at the start we don't know whether it will be desktop, web, mobile or whatever. We don't know which database will be best so we try a few. I guess it's research but it feeds straight into development which is done by the same people within the same project.
