Same here, I'm thinking about installing it to try it out but I'm not going to give them full access to my profile.

You have install, then go to the privacy settings and opt out.

Hence I wrote

> there's an option to opt-out which (apparently) makes the app no more privacy-invading than any other launcher

I'm leery of any all encompassing systems that you can supposedly turn off with a single toggle. For example, you would think that not having a FB profile is the ultimate opt out but they have all your data as a shadow profile.

Setting them to only view your limited profile is one option.

Still, i shouldn't have to do either - neither liking sh*t i don't really dig, nor having to turn off some setting because somebody thought it is acceptable to just change the default behavior...

Also, i don't want to give them _even more_ data about me, even if that is an uphill struggle, more and more seeming sisyphus-like...

you get prompted for such granularity of privacy AFTER it gets installed but not before you could preview such app settings.

I don't remember if this is opt-in or not, but I do not have it in my Firefox. Maybe I just removed it myself immediately after first install, when I went through to update all of the privacy and other browser settings.

I agree that it seems like a crappy extension, and people should be upset about things being preloaded to their browser.

But there's a point here to be made, that if you're concerned about privacy at all today, you need to look at the settings of any software after you install it. It doesn't matter how much previous trust you have for the developers. This should just be default behavior so that any surprise is met immediately, and not after any damage it could perform has been done.

Yeah I'd go a step further and say that any social features are anti-features for me. I really don't need people seeing my activity. Going to make my profile private immediately, and I'm really happy they did this.

From screen resolution to mouse movement, everything can be abused to build profiles

That's correct. I want none of these available without my explicit consent.

As other people below have mentioned it's not even enabled by default and has a privacy warning on it

Agreed, I basically follow the same process when I'm going to interact with someone professionally.

> Yes, they may see I have checked out their profile--so what?)

You can actually turn that off - it means you won't be able to see visitors to your own profile, but I don't care about that information either so I have it disabled.

You have to manually accept the profile that allows this. Of course many people have no idea what a bad thing this is.

This feature was interesting, but on the other hand it affected my own ability to look at other people's profiles - because, no, I don't want people to know that I looked at their profile.

Which is why I completely disabled it. Having the ability to see who viewed your profile seemed cool at first, but then again, it's useless and the downsides are great.

None. They don't need to know that. The feature is on by default without logging-in.

Biggest issue I have with it is there's no way of saying "No I don't ever want to see this intent again" i.e. control the sharing options so I can see a subset

I wish they'd at least quit being sneaky about stuff like this. This wasn't mentioned in the release notes at all. Just a section inside the privacy section of the knowledge base.

Same, I've had to disable it on devices of my family.

I like that it's the default though. Privacy first!

I'm surprised they kept this feature active for so long. Exposing a product / feature without authorization is like opening the flood gates for spam zombies to invade.

I had a feeling people might make a fuss about this. I am really just using it to learn about how the product is being used at the moment since it is so new and I would like to improve the experience for people. I have intentions on adding an opt-out flag in settings for this.
