Have yet to see anything really appealing about mastodon.
Don't think I really liked Twitter either except for the fact that everyone is on it already.
I like Mastodon. Twitter is a black-hole of influencers and hot-stuff personalities trying to eke out a follower or advertising dime. Mastodon is more focused on enriching interaction (rather than infinite scrolling) and it achieves this with a chronological timeline by-default, with zero random 'recommended' content. It sucks all of the ego-driven nastiness out of the equation and lets you return to a comfortable feed.
I like Mastodon but it is a different experience than Twitter. I follow non-famous people with my interests on Mastodon and famous tech people with my interests on Twitter. It is almost like the two services are complementary.
The interactions on there are just so much more organic than on Twitter. You get to actually have discussions with people, instead of aiming for as much snark as possible.
IMO: Mastodon is already a great knock-off Twitter. There's much more conversations between peers compared to Twitter which feels like celebrity RSS with a comment section.
