There is a case to be made for the cyclical nature of criticism, though we have to keep in mind the possibility of a cycle being really bad too...
(as we surely forgot a lot of them already).
Sure, we can criticize, but just keep in mind cycles of criticism and acceptance are the norm in the past. That many of us have forgotten the outrage and moved to acceptance is only further demonstration of this pattern.
Will the future be different? Maybe.. technology (especially communications tech) might be the thing that lets us break the cycle.
Especially now, jammed together as we are in the global village, I suspect criticism is something we should only use defensively. Even criticism of ideas should be restricted to ideas we don't like but can't seem to avoid. Bearing in mind that if criticisms fail then perhaps the idea is a good one after all.
It would be interesting to see how many of these criticisms are criticisms of these things as they stood and not for their potential; it seems ridiculous to place the onus on the critics to see if someone can execute well in the future.
