So, Facebook doesn't want to share the data it wants us to share with them? Figures...

Facebook executives repeat this line that they don’t sell or share your data. Except, they share your data, because that’s what got them into this mess. Why don’t they ever explain what they actually DO do with the data?

I agree that it appears that Facebook may be sharing data without users' approval. I was just pointing out that they aren't in this case.

I wonder how normal people respond when they see that.

The problem is Facebook data is on a lot of other companies' servers at this point, and nobody knows who has what data.

Everyone has been saying this for years. I honestly can't believe anyone would think that Facebook shares all their data with you.

I don't know if you know this, but we all have access to facebook data. Not much of it is private

It's not Facebook's data. It's the users' data.

This is my main quibble with people who are shocked at what Facebook (and Reddit) do with their data.

These companies can't do anything with your data if you don't give them any. Yet, people are willingly giving them such detailed personal information. Even as detailed as telling them their exact location at a particular time.

They're then shocked when the company does something with it.

You can't give someone a gift and then dictate what they do with it.

What's even worse is that these same people are then giving these companies OTHER people's information by, for instance, posting photos of others who aren't on the platform.

Facebook doesn't sell user data (it sells targeted ads, advertisers don't get access to the data).

Facebook collected this data for years but only recently started disclosing it. There's no reason to trust that they're disclosing all the data they're collecting.

If Facebook were open about what exact information it shares and who it shares it with, then this vague crap wouldn't be going on.

Yeah, that's the whole issue. I cannot think of any reason why Facebook would want to store that data that benefits the user.

What's really striking is how user-hostile this conversation is. Forget about whether the user wants to share their data or not - it's all about what Facebook wants to do. In this case, that's snuffing competition by denying access, in the case of Cambridge Analytica, it's sharing data for purposes of shady data "research".

It is not the users' data but Facebook's data about the users. And Facebook doesn't protect the the users' privacy but its assets.

huh? Whoever considered facebook data private..

Facebook only has an issue with people getting the data for free.

Facebook only made someone ask for data to give it to them and you think that's something they shouldn't feel wrong about?

I'm not sure what your point is. Are you trying to argue that all data Facebook has should be public? That sounds like the opposite of privacy to me.

But you consented to give your data to your friend... why is it Facebook's problem what your friend does with your data?
