> we favor cloud-based applications over those that are privately deployed or homegrown open-source products

no, thanks

> Is it open source?

Probably not

> Why do I care?

You might not.

> The same reason I don't use AWS or Google Cloud only datastores: I want to avoid vendor lockin.

Sounds like this isn't the product for you then.

Is that a surprise?

> When used with our Sapling-compatible server and virtual file system (we hope to open-source these in the future)

Sorry, I just can't take an "open-source" project seriously that uses "we hope to open-source these in the future" in its pitch.

> I use some tools that are not open source, and which I would not even want to be open source.

Why would you specifically want proprietary software?

> I wouldn’t consider any of this open source any more.

I agree with most of your comment, but not that.

>I also really appreciate the strong commitment to open source.

If anything they did a great disservice to the spirit of open source by including this in their oss

https://github.com/facebook/react/blob/master/PATENTS

I honestly don't care about any of their oss, but this is setting a dangerous precedent .

> Does a company have to open source their entire product to meet with your approval?

Not OP, but it does seem a little hypocritical to demand others completely open source their projects while still holding onto proprietary software.

> Unfortunately

This is a deliberate choice from companies that want to exploit open source without giving back to the ecosystem.

> don't give back anything even remotely related to their business model.

Why should they? It would be nice if they did but they'd be directly enabling their competition. That's not what open source is all about as far as I understand it.

> people won't want AWS/GCP/Azure to slap a UI on top of their free open-source product and resell it

If it wasn't open-source it won't be as popular as it is in the first place, Redis is also using ton of open source software or libraries for free.

Not defending AWS/GCP/Azure, I actually got my software used when i was young by a large company for free (not even a mention- Still using it i think, 5M+ Play Store Downloads), but that is the spirit of open source

> a lot of the best tools are open source

That is simply NOT true.

> but Windows, Android, and IOS can be picky and not play well with open source. It scares me off a bit from using it.

This is what scares me off from using Windows, Android or iOS :)

> I'd wager you don't want fighter jet or missile guidance software to be open source.

I'd be OK with that.

> Namely that it would be expensive to open source it with little benefit in return.

Ok, so the whole technology is irrelevant and should not be used then.

> Canonical already spent a large amount of investment opensourcing launchpad

Why develop it as non-open-source to begin with?

> And we want it to be open source.

I don't see how that bit would be a problem. The market size, yes, it's a problem, but it's supposed to be a cloud service, there is no loss on the clients being open source.

> but its not open source so unsure of trustworthy

If this is your attitude towards computing, you may want to pivot away from Windows-based systems eventually.

> Indie at its core. While it’s my personal opinion, many developers appreciate tools that are not backed by tech giants (for example React backed by Facebook, and Angular by Google), but rather grows from a community and that is why it is highly oriented to developer needs.

This is a great point - and quite true in my experience as well. I would not build a business using an open source project backed by a tech giant.

> Developer tools, especially ones around code should be open-source.

I don't agree. I want the freedom to choose what tools I use, and what their development/profit models are.

> So much money has been spent on mimicking the private sector innovators.

They're using open source Cloud Foundry, literally to avoid spending millions of dollars mimicking the private sector innovators.

> and they are genuinely interested in cooperation.

In my opinion, they are not at all interested in cooperation until they port Office and Visual Studio to Linux or open source them.
