I guess it just depends on how much you like/dislike driving. I hate driving. I hate parking. I hate traffic.

I'd happily take a less nice walk than being forced to drive.

I'm similarly a car owner that loves walking and hates driving. I've managed at least a few times to turn that pity on its head, "Seriously? It's like three blocks tops. So much better to just walk it." There's certainly pleasure any time walking directly to a destination is faster than the people taking the time to walk back to their cars, drive them through traffic, and find a parking spot at the destination.

I totally agree. I hate just about everything about driving: it's a time-suck, incredibly stressful, and environmentally awful (not to mention lazy). I live in a walkable and bikeable area specifically to reduce the amount that I have to be in a car. Rent tends to be a bit higher in these areas, but for me the tradeoff is completely worth it!

I'm only 62 and I hate driving. If I can walk or bike where I'm going, that's my preference by far, modulo whatever the weather is doing.

Unfortunately where I live the public transportation is awful, so I end up driving more than I would prefer.

then whats the downside?

Personally. Driving is stressful and uncertain (doubly so in cities with a lot of traffic), while walking is nice and relaxing.

Quite possible negative. For many people it can easily be a net negative to be driven around rather than driving one's self simply in terms of how you feel afterwards. All else being equal, I'd prefer to drive than be driven. Sometimes not all else is equal, like parking is hard, or I'm taking a trip and need to leave the car for the wife, and then I take a taxi or Uber or something. But I would assign a value of something like $50/hour to not being in a taxi/Uber.

Subjectively worse, not objectively worse. I think driving is much more convenient and nice for most things I like to do. The only exceptions I can think of are if I were a kid in a car-centric area (strangely, the thinking in the US is usually reversed, kids supposedly need to be in the burbs), or if I was drunk. I don't often get drunk, so I'd prefer to drive for everything from minor groceries to outdoor activities ~100% of the time.

Nah, driving is also stressful and traffic is not fun.

I’ve seen recently a fair amount of car enthusiasts start buying into the walkable cities/public transit mantra, because a car enthusiast does not find city/suburban stop and go traffic to be the thing they’re enthusiastic about.

I enjoy driving, personally.

I don't enjoy _having_ to drive somewhere, however.

For me a drive wouldn't help a lot, unless I guess you live in a quiet area. I prefer walking where I don't have to devote any thought to avoiding other cars and following road rules.

Personally I don't even like driving :) To me it's a minor annoyance, like washing the dishes. But it's just SO much more convenient, so it's worth it.

Gotta agree with you. I hate driving.

I hate dealing with the other humans on the road and the stupid things they do. I hate the constant uncertainty, not being able to assume anything because people don't even signal turns properly. I hate the roads, poorly maintained, full of speed bumps, full of potholes, full of people walking around without a care in the world. I hate having to maintain my car.

I hate being forced to drive. I only do it because I hate other forms of transport even more.

Nope. Most of the personal benefit of not having to drive would be that I could do other things with my time. If I've got to be doing something I don't like anyway, then that defeats much of the point.

I think people generally like driving cars. They just hate traffic.

I hate driving and I am willing to pay to not drive

In contrast I hate driving cars. I feel like it’s my least favorite tool. I have a nice car, I’ve driven even nicer cars in different styles and hated them all. Driving requires so much of my attention I feel like it’s invasive. In addition I feel like I have to sit relatively still and use my muscles in very particular way. It’s a trap for my mind in body, and an experience I don’t find pleasant.

I am an American and will go out of my way to use any other mode of transportation, even at the expense of time or money. Sometime’s it’s just unavoidable.

I would love to not drive. I have a 45-minute daily commute each way, and paying attention for 45 minutes of driving is not something I look forward to. I'd rather surf the web, stare out of the windows, or just about anything else. Some people love driving; good for them. But for me, driving is just the thing you have to do to get to point B, where the interesting thing is.

Sitting in miles of traffic for hours a day then worrying about parking is just not a life I'd want to live.

I hate driving.

Then it sucks to be you. Don't drive if you don't like driving. Walk, or cycle. Or get a job that doesn't require you to commute.
