Sending raw data and _receiving_ raw data are NOT the same thing. It's been clear that the iPhone 4S sends raw data to the cloud, based on people sniffing the network shortly after release.

sort by: page size:

What kinda data is sent?

The difference between receiving data and sending data is a bit more than a technical difference.

I wonder how iOS communication works - does it drop down to layer 2 and send raw data frames?

Indeed it is, inside a sensor (that's why so much trouble replacing one on iphone), gladly raw data never leaves it (same goes for Android as well, except really really old versions, like 4-)

No, some of the data could be sent via the company's back end.

I would say the difference is they sent the data to a 3rd party.

The question is how does the data get to the iPhone, and yes, it appears it all goes through their servers.

The phone was analyzing what you would be sending to the cloud.

So they do send data out.

Yes, the actual image data doesn’t get sent, but all the information gained from said image data does.

> both iOS and Google Android share data with Apple/Google on average every 4.5 mins

> Both iOS and Google Android transmit telemetry

> both iOS and Google Android send details to Apple/Google

Are there no details on what sort of data these packets contain? It should be possible for users to decrypt and inspect these packets.

Where's the data being sent to?

That's not what he's saying. He's saying a stream of data from a server rather than directly from sensors.

hey pudquick. um the reason why it is sending and receiving is because on the previous page (USAGE PAGE), it pings your icloud capacity storage size to the servers (Total Storage/Available). That's why it only increases when you go in and out of the "Cellular Usage" page.

Also that's why it doesnt work when you turn icloud off -- because it doesn't have the storage fields on the USAGE page anymore.

sorry to burst thoust bubbleth

i think is more about a lot of data we received is almost useless, we uploading data while we receive.

So how would you receive the data, then?

It does, but no raw data are sent, most of the aggregation happens on the device. We upload sleep patterns, average values for some sensors (temp/humidity, ambient light) and major events (loud sound or quick change in ambient light). We use those data for historical data analysis on the server side.

The cloud service relays commands to the cover when your phone is not connected to your wifi too (you can warm up your bed while ubering back home on a cold night).

In this literal same article they talk about how iPhones send this kind of telemetry too. A different kind of MB amount, but they still do this. They're also horribly locked down and their owner thinks you should pay 30% tax on every single payment transaction you do in life.

So I'm not entirely sure what your iPhone advertisement is supposed to support here.

Can you please point to any evidence or source? I've never heard of this happening (beyond what every other app can do in terms of downloading and uploading data) and the wording isn't clear as to what exactly you mean.
