We have some that turn into flashing yellow for the main road and flashing red for the secondary.

Some around here blink yellow on the main road and red on the side street at night.

Works decently well.

I live near a road that is divided and normally a 50, unless children are present. It'd be nice if they had flashing lights.

I can see one use case, on a busy road if there is a major collision the emergency services being able to switch them to bright white would be great.

This is correct, but I'm not sure the authorities take that into consideration. In my case, it's the yellow and red that look identical, but that doesn't stop them from making single flashing red lights and single flashing yellow lights. Makes life exciting sometimes.

Depends on the state. Here in Texas, many construction vehicles will have yellow and blue lights.

Actually, I’ve got a few intersections right near me with such examples.

There’s a traffic light for the lane straight forward.

Directly next to it is one for those turning right.

The forward light has Red, Yellow and Green, the turn lane’s light has only Yellow and Green (both with the arrow overlay).

At another one, there’s lights for busses added below or at the side of the existing light, adding one, or two modules (below or at the side).

Yes, turn signalling.

Also lights with more than three bulbs, some indicating left or right turns, of which will take on two or more colours themselves. Some lights have a bulb above red for cyclists and transit. Some lights called beacons are a single bulb that take on several colours.

Why can't the US simply require auto makers to use a damn yellow light for turn signals? This is common in almost every country. Yet in the US (and Canada, btw), we get the stupid Red color for break and turn signals.

Such annoyance.

Yes, we do have those in the US.

The versions that I hate are where there are always flashing yellow lights at those whether there is a pedestrian present or not. It is confusing and teaches people to ignore the flashing light as it is meaningless. I prefer the kind where a pedestrian presses a button and the lights flash to tell the cars to stop.

Newer traffic lights where I live will flash the green light for a few seconds before turning amber.

Flashing yellow left arrows remove the ambiguity that creates 'yellow trap' and also reduce cycle waste by permitting left turns when opposing traffic has extended green.

Blinking yellow already indicates proceed with caution in the US, so this would lead to ambiguity, which isn't something you want on the road.

Several cities take the even simpler approach of having lights that change from timed cycles to blinking red/yellow after a certain hour.

Not always. There are mixed lanes that also have arrow lights from the turns.

If it’s on a British road, said self-driving car will see normal yellow indicators, since red is not a permissible colour. As mentioned in the article.

In the UK they are different colours and patterns so blind and partially sighted folks can tell what they're near.

They're red near pedestrian controlled lights and yellow near uncontrolled lights or crossings with no lights. There's different patterns of the raised dots/lines for some uses - like steps or platform edges.

None of this had I noticed until someone pointed out there was a method at work. :)

I hate red turn signals because I often confuse it with brake lights if I can only see half a vehicle. This leads to premature and sudden braking for cars that follow. I think it should be required that turn signals be amber. I only see it on American cars. I kid you not, I complain about this everyday in the US while driving.

What's funny in certain countries (right now for me the GCC) is that people believe if you flash with your brights at the right speed and frequency it will automatically set them to green, or shorten the interval on the opposing traffic direction so it goes green for you sooner.

Do other people believe this? I have watched people try for over 60 seconds or more until giving up, and I find this hilarious even today.
