“Now, he’s increasingly isolated and receding from the spotlight.”
That’s almost...poetic. A pleasant surprise from Politico.
It is also what happens to every person in a position of great authority when they start turning off the stage lights, one by one. He might want to take a page from Harry Truman and Jimmy Carter on how to manage the transition with grace and élan.
Of the three requirements of leadership: to play to your strengths, find others to complement your weaknesses, and to have someone trustworthy around to tell you when over-exercising your strengths were becoming a weakness, President Trump always had problems with the third.
It's only a personal suspicion, but I think this is his way to step down from the presidency with a sense of dignity and hope it will give him some sympathy credit when the dust settles.
He’s not the only one. But at least 4 top people have already left because of him leaving. He can clearly take people with him. That’s the comment you’re responding to. His power isn’t him alone. It’s everyone he brings with him.
From the outside, he doesn't seem like a strong leader at all.
Besides him not leaving a clear successor[1][2], I think his communication is disingenuous. The kind of management-speak that aims to hide poor decision-making behind a facade of cheer and care.
People are scared of "might makes right", but I've found "nice makes right" to be far more insidious and pernicious in our society.
"he is almost certainly loving his time there right now."
Certainly not. He loves the attention and power he has gained, but he certainly does not love the bad numbers (Tesla stock also went DOWN as well) and that the quite meaningless poll whether he should step down, was not in his favor.
He did not comment on that one with "Vox Populi Vox Dei".
I agree that he's renounced his long-held sweeping powers a few years ago, but he still has "editorial input", sits on the board and clearly still holds a certain influence.
I'm not sure about that. He also had the "be careful what you wish for" tweet, which indicates he had something in mind if the vote was to step down. Also, I can't imagine he planned to put so much energy into this one part of his empire forever.
Or he has already decided to step down (or was forced to by his investors), knows how the poll will turn out, and is creating the illusion that the masses have a say in it.
That's true, which is why I explained why I think he's making smart moves.
Maybe he has departed from his usual trajectory towards success, but at this point (given his history), the burden of proof falls on the people who think he's lost his mind to explain precisely why they assume they know more than he does.
What, no? He’s behaving erratically, flailing, and blaming everyone but himself for his failure as a leader. That’s not how we all act, and clearly narcissistic behavior. The sociopathy is evident the other day from his “graveyard” tweet.
Seems he hasn't done much of anything and it's more that he rubbed everyone the wrong way. And is being opaque in his decision-making to the point that the volunteers believe he's being dishonest. I get it, but it still seems like an overreaction.
I'm glad he is stepping down to take care of himself.
