My coworker does.

He’s replaced the battery but it’s still the same phone. They don’t care much for camera upgrades and it works for them.

I used to and now have a phone that’s 4 years old. I don’t plan on upgrading any time soon. There is nothing compelling about the newer models. “Better camera” pushed a lot of upgrades for a while, but my camera is good enough.

I don't care about the camera, so I have absolutely no reason to upgrade.

Maybe if they come out with a phone where the battery will last for a week or more then I'll upgrade.

I do. Why would I replace a phone for an increasingly more expensive one if it's not broken?

I'm not sure that any significant number of people have switched phones due to lack of updates. It usually comes down to:

(1) Battery stops holding a charge

(2) The device gets damaged

(3) Cameras get a lot better

"I basically upgrade for the camera improvements every year"

No wonder the earth is warming... You really need a new phone every year just for the camera ? I really don't get why anyone would do that without an actual professional need.

Many do. Most don't (at least from what I've observed around me).

I've never replaced a phone sooner than 5 years after I got it, but I know I'm a weirdo.

It was nice to be able to upgrade the camera years after purchasing the phone though.

I can't imagine why so many people keep swapping out for the latest phones even when their older models are perfectly functional - granted it could perhaps use a newer battery.

Won't be upgrading until a New removable battery phone is made.

Asking out of curiosity, why isn’t replacing the phone an option? :)

But that's what I mean. In 3-4 years I don't want to upgrade my phone, but if I need to replace some broken parts, it would be nice to be able to upgrade them. I replaced my FP3 cameras at the time with the better ones in that exact scenario.

I don't think there'd be hardware reasons not to, but I'd be surprised if anyone did that instead of just selling it as a reason to upgrade to a new phone :P

I can always switch back to the old phone, if I can figure out how to ensure I can always answer calls and read notifications. I’d miss the upgraded camera but maybe it’s worth it.

I only upgraded my phone recently because I couldn't get a new battery.

Sure, the new one is better, but the old one did everything I wanted it to do.

No. I just feel that phones are in the asymptotic phase now and don’t see any reason to upgrade other than unfixable battery life issues, worn out charging ports and other such things.

What about the people upgrading phones?

Yeah I feel the battery passed “long enough” some time ago.

I used to upgrade my phone because the battery replacement would basically be a discount on buying a new one instead, now I buy a new one when my screen ends up shattered.

Apple does battery replacements on them for a reasonable price. Might not be worth it for a phone that old. But it is nice that Apple keeps updating devices until virtually no one is using them anymore.

Yeah I want to use it 1-2 years more, I’m not a power user and it’s still a perfectly fine phone, runs really fast and gets updates, so why throw it out?

Also as I said below if you replace the battery yourself TouchID will stop working as the security chip thinks the phone has been tampered with, so if you wanna keep using that there’s only the official route I think. Not sure about FaceID but it might have the same problem.
