They can go to the local council / municipality and get the help there (either computers they can use for free, or from the clerks who can help them).

I've been trying to think of ideas of how they could help themselves. The only thing I can think of is to use technology - camera's everywhere, body cams and tracking devices on vehicles and people. I know they aren't wealthy, but the town could put cameras on the streets like the do in London. I'm just brainstorming here... Such a sad situation they are in.

1. Get on IRC, people hang out there all day waiting to help people for free.

2. Here's a volunteer hotline to call for help: http://rails.pockethotline.com/

Perhaps this is something they can get a micro-volunteer to help them with.

I don't have the technological expertise to help, but I'm want to assist financially. Would that be helpful? Is there anywhere we can donate?

I was able to find a local legal aid society through my state's bar association, so thank you. Looks like they accept volunteers as well, perhaps they could use some tech service as you suggested.

Since you have family in the area maybe you can answer this question:

What do people need and is there anything that can be done to help them?

I like local support networks would be a better place to manage this. There could be a place for software which helps those groups manage the local people they are helping (and those helping them).

Start at your local government, figure out what they can and can't do to help. Go to the next level, figure out what can and can't be done at that level. Keep going.

Find a nonprofit you like and offer them free tech support.

Thank you, I will sign them up on this service and see if it helps.

Not every community has resources for that kind of thing. I am in a small town in Texas and was delivered here by people in even smaller towns, towns too small to have such services. That is just where I happened to be when things suddenly fell apart.

I will check out the forum. Thanks.

What can we do to help them? I was thinking to create free programming resources but I realize not everyone can be programmer and there are already a lot of free resources out there?

help them.

Most libraries run free legal help programs, that should be a great way to find and help more people in need.

Find someone to help and help them.

That’s nice... but how do you get help if you need to find something, or whatever else?

Maybe see about volunteering? No snark--they could probably use the help.

IME, this only works if you can get regular help from them. A one-off won't help much at all.

You can also post something on reddit/r/<yourcity> if it's a large city. They can probably help you with other local resources for you to look into.
