Many computer/electrics manufacturers and OEMs, like ASUS, Acer, Foxconn, Wistron, Pegatron, MediaTek, Synology, etc are HQ'd in Taiwan. Though PRC company may be able to supersede them, unlike TSMC.
Taiwan has important semiconductor companies like TSMC. It’s also one of geopolitically unstable regions. I guess this is part of mitigating the risk of chip shortages.
TSMC gets a lot of attention being as prominent as they are, but most people don't realize that the entire computing supply chain is Taiwanese. It's not just the silicon, that's just the tip of the Taiwanese iceberg.
Combine that with China having some manufacturing capacity of its own, China stands to lose far less than the west in a hypothetical war over Taiwan as far as computers go.
Wow. TSMC currently consumes 5% of all power in Taiwan, and is predicted to consume up to 10% in the future, apparently because of EUV. Losing that would be catastrophic for the West, but doesn't China use TSMC chips too? Does the mainland even have a fab that could compete?
TSMC situation is very suspicious. How can Taiwan be sure that their technology will not be copied by Intel and other American companies if they build a factory in US?
Taiwan does far more than just TSMC. That is just one single company, albeit a very essential one. For instance, I don't like to buy hand tools (impact sockets, torque wrenches, etc) made in China, but Taiwanese tools are a higher quality and I have no hesitation purchasing them.
TSMC is actually a Taiwanese company and its most advanced fabs are in Taiwan, a democratic country (more or less, with its own passport, military, government, etc) that is not under the control of China.
I lived in Taiwan for a few years. My company was bought by a Taiwanese company so I was still going there regularly until COVID.
Of all the overseas places I'd be willing to relocate to, Taiwan is near the top of the list. I'd prefer Taipei over Tainan but the two are less than 2 hours apart by HSR.
If you want job security in the USA, the TSMC plant is going to be better than MOST well-known brand named companies in the USA. I'd trust TSMC over Dell or HP for job security, for instance.
