It's interesting that this term is being lost to time as I'd expect almost anyone on this site beyond a certain age used a BBS in the past.

I mean, it's been 20 years, and people seem to be using them sensibly still. I'm not convinced their misuse is a given.

They still exist in the UK, but I've never seen one used.

Why? They still exist and are used by many.

Yes that is very much the case, but people are still using these things.

... and now they're no longer widely used? ;-)

The tragedy is that they're still used now. Not that they were once used.

Maybe they are not considered obsolete?

I remember top loaders being the norm - maybe 30 years or so ago but I am very old.

Not in the 60s, as far as I'm aware. Same principles but widespread use of spars and semi-subs came later.

Mis-titled. A great number of these are still operational. They are just used less often or are harder to find. Obsolete or "lost" is not synonymous with "no longer leading edge".

Fair enough. I was thinking of them as obsolete, but shouldn't since you do see them a surprising amount in Japan.

I betcha most people didn't even know they were considered "deprecated".

I used a lot of these in the late 90s and early 2000s. I guess I'm just old, but a lot of them don't seem that obscure.

Point taken, that was before my time.

I can't imagine many of these being around any more though

Why don't we just use them then? Only enthusiasts would use them now, as they did back then.

And they do exist, they're just not widely used.

I think it's still somewhat common in defense and safety of life type applications, and not much outside of those niches

wow. i remember those. never did know anyone with one, though.

...but no-one uses them anymore.
