Wow, it has 128 GB of ROM! Upgradable to 256 GB! I wonder what's with the operating system that takes up so much space. And no mention of user storage.

sort by: page size:

Even weirder is that it's only bundled with 2TB of storage. If you have more than that you cannot upgrade without losing storage space.

Shame nobody has done a breakdown of exactly what is being held in this used up space.

From what I can find the system folder is 2 GB alone, but we're still well short of almost 5 GB of "stuff." We likely also have a backup image, and then just Samsung's bundled apps?

As a random aside: Why are they still selling 16 GB phones in 2013? I realise the chips are faster than what goes into SD Cards, but given the speed of SSDs and the relative price decrease year upon year, if phones were keeping up we'd be seeing at least 64 GB as standard!

I think only 83 gb of it is usable space after the os is installed with the other applications.

I’ve owned laptops running the upstream OS with that much storage, it’s fine as long as you don’t install any really poorly done closed software.

Re: “main storage” there’s no reason for that, it’s just more android brokenness.

64GB of storage means you cannot upgrade to the full OS version. You would immediately run out of space.

Man, you're crazy, how much disk space does this consume? It seems awesome.

To add to this: the OS already takes up 10-20gb so now it can take close 30gb or nearly half of your hard drive, before you even open the box.

I don't understand why the updates take up so much space -- 7GB according to the article.

Most low end phones are shipping with at least 8GB of storage, but up to 7GB of that is eaten by the system partition usually, giving you effectively no space.

Genuine question: Why do you care about a few hundred MB of disk space for an app?

I could understand if it was a GB or so, but in this day and age it's USD 9c or less worth of disk space (assuming you use high end SSDs, if it's a HDD then it's under 1c).

I would expect the same for smartphones and computers.

it was really frustrating back in the times, when your brand new 8GB android smartphone only had 1 GB of free space out of the box (The 8GB edition of the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua only had 1.25GB of space for the user !)

Nowadays, devices have larger memories. But an android with mandatory apps and 'necessary data', or a Windows 11 can take around 20GB away. It can't be neglected on low end systems. There are still devices with 32, 64 or 80GB out there ! (your redmis or galaxy A XX)

Since most smartphone manufacturers won't let you use another OS or a custom ROM, all of that space should be reserved for them, and not advertised to the customer ! It's the same for computers. Most users buy the computer with the Windows, and will never replace it.

While I get that Windows + pre-installed apps + recovery partition takes up space. When I saw that only 23GB is left after a 64GB capacity, I was shocked.

Compare this to iOS or Android and you'll find it's going against my expectation. I doubt I'm alone. 23GB is not a lot of space these days if you plan to use it for something serious.

The default is 128GB..

The system partition on the Nexue One is only 145 MB.

Then there are some people, like me, who were unhappy with the size of the storage space and replaced the ssd with a 256GB ssd.

Storage not a problem any more. :)

It's missing .gb

Ooooh wow. That's a lot of diskspace...

There's another thing we are missing here: WTF is Microsoft putting in a 30GB operating system????? Really, come on. 30 gigs of WHAT?

What, 9TB disk space? And 128GB RAM?

How much of this is actually utilized? O.o
