Hey, the idea of a replaceable battery is a good one. Too bad it was generally uninvented across the board some 10-15 years ago.

Yeah. That's why replaceable battery is a good idea but they disappeared in the recent years.

You're missing the real reason for replaceable batteries: they need replacement after a few years because their capacity decreases with age.

Or they could, you know, design the thing so that the battery is replaceable and provide easily accessible replacement batteries.

Or just make the battery replaceable.

Once upon a day, phones had replaceable batteries. I'm still holding on to my ancient phone specifically because of that.

Revolutionary idea ... make batteries replaceable. We had it back in the days. You could just remove the old batteries and put the new ones.

I still remember when phones had replaceable batteries.

There have been plenty of smartphones with replaceable batteries. It's just in the last couple of years that everyone has given up on them. I'm still using a Galaxy Note 4 with a replaceable battery. I haven't replaced it yet, but just a few weeks ago I had to pull the battery to get the phone out of a reboot loop. (That was the first time I had seen that with this phone.) If I hadn't been able to remove the battery, I would have have had to wait for the phone to drain it completely and shut off.

Even back when batteries were easily replaced, I don’t think that stopped people from getting new phones every couple years.

I still have a perfectly useable Android with a replaceable battery.

People still upgraded right past it to built in batteries.

I do think that most users might be willing to replace a battery every couple of years. Maybe not, we've become a throwaway culture mostly. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be an option or possible.

Fact: All Battery powered devices should have easily user replaceable batteries

A replaceable battery is a better solution.

I think most of us moved on from the easily replaceable battery discussion years ago.

I should point out for years we had phones with replaceable batteries. I didn't know anybody that carried one with them.

Why not just have removable battery? It can be easily replaced.

It's probably just cheaper to make them non-replaceable. Replaceable batteries are becoming a fairly rare feature.

When I hear "replaceable battery", it makes me think of the days when packing a spare battery was a viable alternative to bringing a laptop charger with you (I don't think any MBPs were like this, but Powerbooks were). It's funny how the Overton window has shifted.

This procedure looks doable and relatively low risk for technical people, but it's not something that my mom can do while sitting at a Starbucks

Having irreplaceable batteries makes your device have a very short lifespan. This is horrible for the environment. I'm typing this on a pixel 1 that I've replaced the battery in, and have used for 4+ years.

Laptops should have replaceable batteries. Period. If you get a new laptop every 2 years and don't know what it's like to have a perfectly good MacBook with 30minutes of battery life, then maybe you can just imagine being in that position and consider how globally impactful this anti consumer practice is.

or replaceable battery.
