So is Hunter Biden’s private media now banned again? Maybe not, as long as “Twitter” decides it is newsworthy (but in such a way that Elon’s media or location is not)? My head is spinning.

This is an emotionally charged topic, apparently, but I just do not see any reason to believe that if Elon Musk takes Twitter private that they will start banning unions, journalists, and forcing people who are trans to come out. No evidence of that.

W.r.t removing current limits, again I see no evidence of that, except maybe people who were banned for making fun of journalists for telling them the same thing they were telling other people (learn 2 code) might get reinstated. Death threats? No chance. Blatant racism? Nope. Harassment? Well does that happen already? It's not clear. Sexism? Again no clear lines here. Trump I hope never comes back and it may stay that way. I don't think Elon really cares about Trump.

It sounds like Twitter could easily shed hundreds of millions of fake followers by banning Elon Musk any account that follows Elon Musk!

Elon is likely secretive Trump supporter. Over the years I noticed a lot of his thinking align with Trump. This take over is very expected when Twitter banned Trump. I was expecting something significant happening to twitter during Biden years. Lucky guess.

Elon made a category error in thinking Twitter is a free speech platform. It is an advertising sales platform, just like NBC or whatever.

This is specifically related to Twitter and Elon. Not just Elon.

Why not? Twitter is now Elon’s private property, existing only to serve his personal interests. There is no reason for it to be given special treatment.

Worth noting that as we speak, the Chinese government is drowning out tweets about the protests by posting spam and porn to the relevant hashtags.

This is only happening because Elon fired the moderation team that used to guard against such propaganda.

He is a self-dealing hypocrite. Twitter isn’t about free speech. It’s a private company run for one reason alone. To further Elon Musk’s personal agenda.

At this point:

1) The Verge is an awful journalistic news source

2) Elon has devolved into a terribly obnoxious person. But, if you assess his choices while setting your ire for the man aside, his recent choices at Twitter seem to be bear his textbook approach for how he built Tesla and SpaceX: Cull for the “smartest guy/gal in the room”, build cut throat culture of moving fast on top of that. The difference is that he’s doing it a decade down the road, and by all accounts he probably doesn’t actually want to (own Twitter). The thing about this approach is it has a track record of success.

So can we please, stop posting about Elon already. He’s not doing anything surprising, of course Twitter is in chaos. Management just switched and like 70-80% of staff is gone. Leave the man alone and let him succeed or fail in building Twitter. Isn’t the best way to deal with trolls (ie Elon) to just ignore them?

What was Twitter last week? What was Twitter when they banned a sitting president of the United States?

It's only now political because Elon owns it?

I dont really understand how Elon could just ignore Twitter, if something happens in Spacex, they can handle it in private, but if something happens in Twitter, like Trump is unbanned and he starts to share Russian propaganda, everyone is going to know about it right away. Is Elon going to sit and focus on other things while his phone is going mad?

Banning him at this stage would almost certainly expose Twitter to massive liability, especially as they have shown they will ignore rules for public figures. Twitter could only get away with banning Elon if he egregiously violated their policies, and Elon is too good of a troll to do anything that severe.

And this is exactly Elon's goal for Twitter.

A private platform without uptight censorious people banning anything they deem offensive from the right or the left.

Can't wait for Matt to hit the motherlode: Elon banning journalists out of personal spite, making a poll to unban them but underhandedly demanding they delete their (never rule-breaking) tweets.

Just a few more searches and he will hit it for sure! Unless his handlers demand he ignore that, of course.

Elon has said a number of times that the only content that should be removed from Twitter is illegal content.

Did Elon pay the AWS bill? That seems like a likely culprit. Twitter instances are being forcibly shutdown.

Twitter is a private co/platform so Elon can do whatever he wants (within the law).

Doesn't mean that users (like me) are going to be happy or continue using Twitter.

Looking at what is not allowed on HN, the same things are disallowed here. How is that not the same?

Elon will either let Twitter be run over by political spam and see it lose its value, or realize he needs to healthily stifle some speech to maintain his investment.

Here's one that has been permanently banned: https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2023/04/elon-musk-twitter-st...

It seems like a reasonable question to me. Elon has his ideas of how he wants to moderate Twitter. Things like this happen (sadly). How does he intend to moderate them?

He has been talking an awful lot about what he thinks. And then as soon as this happens he stops talking. That says something. He could have easily said “stuff like that won’t be allowed“. And there would be no story.
