He did, but if it were not extortion then the person running it would come back with a "no" rather than a counter offer.

I think if he asked ‘pay me or xx’ it would be extortion. What he did was ‘an offer you cant refuse’

They didn't extort it out of him, he offered it. If they actually asked for it in return for stopping the attack, then it's extortion.

No, but it is extortion

Isn't that extortion?

Isn't this extortion?

No, it's not extortion, it's breach of contract. If he didn't' want to perform the contract, he shouldn't have taken it on.

This is not a great example of anything else, despite your hyperbole.

That's extortion isn't it?

It's probably still extortion regardless of intent if they say no. How are they to know you won't do anything malicious?

Isn't a form of extortion?

Extortion?

It's still extortion.

“Extort”?

You are correct, it is not extortion. It's blackmail.

It's extortion.

Isn't this basically extortion then?

Yes. You are right. That is not extortion.

Isn’t that usually called extortion?

Um, no, that's a pretty clear cut example of extortion.

Whether they follow through with the threats or not is irrelevant. The act of extortion has already been committed.

How is that "extortion"?
