There is the persistent rumor Apple will equip their Macbooks and iPads with retina-like displays. Once they do, everyone will have to do it.

I believe folks have already seen evidence in OSX that Apple will be doing "retina" displays for laptops and desktops. Continued movement towards a resolution-independent OS.

I'm praying that the retina display really does happen, not because I plan on buying an ipad - but because it will finally get laptop manufacturers to stop producing crappy 720p displays.

Speak again in 3 years.

Today, I am a geek (not really a designer) and 2 out of 3 of my devices have retina displays already (iPhone and iPad). Within much less than 3 years, all my devices will. Within 3 years, there will be no Apple device being sold that doesn't have a Retina display. Will other vendors follow suit? If they don't, they'll be left in the dust, so I imagine they will have to, if they can.

It's usually a good idea to skate where the puck is going, rather than where it is now. In 3 years, the puck will be retina. My Macbook Air is not Retina, so I can't be arsed to design for Retina... yet. Once my Mac has a Retina display, I will design for Retina, and let the lower-res experience be inferior. By then, most of the people who care about such things will have Retina displays anyway.

I'm betting Apple will launch a family of Retina desktop monitors.

Also, remember it's still beta software. People do public betas to surface issues like these.

Or retina displays.

But retina display is the future. (At least I hope so.)

Why do you think a retina display would be more likely?

With all the hype around retina displays, will we see this type of thing reappear?

Perhaps we eventually see generic Retina displays with open standards ports.

When any Apple product gets upgraded to the Retina display, there will be no subtlety, and you won't have to carefully search Hacker News to find out about it.

I'm assuming that by retina screen you simply mean high resolution? Because Retina display is just the apple term for a high resolution screen.

What do they need to do special for retina displays?

It's a retina display.

Retina displays don't matter because the majority of your users don't have them. Problem solved :)

Sounds like waiting for apps to support retina displays :)

Obviously, retina is not Intel's problem; plenty of notebooks sold by the fruit have these displays already. Its only a matter of whether the OS/app ecosystem can deal with high resolution displays.

Seems like that's why they are investing more on Retina displays.

Just based on recent history, wouldn't Apple more likely try to prevent the rest of the industry from moving to Retina-like displays?

It’s 2023, Retina and otherwise high res displays are very common and the way to serve images to them is known.
