I got downvoted for my response asking for clarification, classic HN.

My tenure was more than a decade ago, but the space was on 11th and folsom and has brick walls on the inside. The space next to the corner venue. It has been several different venues since I had it.

Ah, I see, looks like that might have been a few years ago, when I last worked in that space.

Yes, that’s the one, thank you!

I did notice in ~2019 that they were no longer in the same building (which appeared empty), guess they just moved somewhere less prominent.

The entrance (and thus the address) is on Market – 995 Market. It sits between Market and Stevenson. Jessie is a block closer to Mission, and yeah 6th and Mission has a reputation.

It's zoned for mixed use (although the donut shop on the ground floor left years ago and I'm pretty sure that space has been vacant for a few years). It's in between Powell and Civic Center stations. It's a pretty decent location, with some great food and entertainment near by although the fancier restaurants closed ages ago. It's basically across the street from the Golden Gate Theater and the Warfield.

The neighborhood is what it is. IKEA and their new, popular, food hall is less than a block away. Looks like there's some hipster dofus AI incubator right there too.

The building itself just wasn't well maintained. Last I saw you were far more likely to get trapped in the elevator than mugged.

It was for a few years. We moved last fall to 3rd and Bryant.

I have been renting a music rehearsal space at Hyde and Eddy since 2013, and lived in the city since 2010. I have never seen this as described. However, there’s a good chance what you have seen might be a few different things that appeared like that. For one, Larkin between Ellis and Eddy can look like this (also at there often at The Chairman when there was a brick and mortar there).

I guess I could have added this to the original story, but the company owned and built the building themselves. In the late 70s. And the interior apparently hasn't changed since.

I just checked and you are correct. I guess they probably leveled the old building, which was 3030 Corvin. Anyone that was there in the mid 2000s remembers when Facebook heated the place up and they had box fans every where, an extra generator parked in the parking lot, etc.

That's the old betahaus location. They recently moved.

Yikes. I participated in that (briefly, went home after the first month) and thought this write-up seemed too familiar.

On a positive note, The Alley is a way cool co-working space, I miss it dearly. Routine nightly events/speaking engagements were pretty awesome.

You’re in luck that space might be available again. They moved out of that building several months ago[0].

Yep, I was at K10 the entire time. Was just opening when I was there. Very beautiful space and nice folks.

Yes and recent.

>An inward-swinging door - three times cited as a code violation by West Warwick inspectors and three times replaced by club managers - was blocking the exit closest to the stage.

Yes, indeed. In it's circa 2014 incarnation, when I last worked there.

(I don't really know what happened to it since.)

Oh no, I remember having a great time working from there. It used to be a great place.

I moved there in 2007, and moved away in 2017. This would've been the earlier part of that period, given the geek pub didn't really recover that reputation after the fire in 2010.

Ah, 5 years too late! I used to live 3 blocks from there (in the Honeyman building.)

You forgot to mention the two best perquisites of working there: Powell's books a few blocks one direction, and the Low Brow Lounge a few blocks the other. I don't thing YC or Techstars can beat that!

I’ve lived in the Bay Area since 2002. During that time I’ve seen Ruby Skye close. A place whose name I can’t recall closed in the design district. DNA Lounge looked like it might go away some years ago. I don’t know what the story was, but a coworker wore a “Save DNA Lounge,” shirt so I have the impression they were in trouble (they’re still open, however).

There was a spot where the basement room had seats from airplanes and was super small and intimate that I’ve never been able to find again after a DnB party (if anyone recognizes this description, please fill me in). I have a sense that there are other places I’ve been that are no more, but it’s been a number of years and there was a lot of alcohol involved.

Hell, there were two websites for tracking events that went defunct over time. BayRaves.com and something else that I don’t recall. We used to have outdoor festivals like Love Parade driving through the streets and then circling up to party at the end of the route. It seem like the scene has been on a slow decline forever.

Haha! That’s the one, but I worked in the old building that was burned down when the neighbouring business sparked a fire :(

The opening of that Borders was a tragic loss of an art house theatre (the New Varsity) and the arrival of a corporate behemoth that drove most of the rest of the bookshops (one next door!) out of business.

The permit for that building required that it be possible to turn it back into a live/film theatre. A friend of mine and I looked into turning it into a nightclub but in the end it was too much of a hassle (and Palo Alto is no longer the kind of place that has nightclubs and porno theatres (not the New Varsity!) downtown).
