Apple does allow this. It’s just the issue of finding software to install.

I assume he's asking about 3rd party software, which may be more limited than what Apple's built in software is allowed to do.

That's not viable when Apple prevents you from installing arbitrary software on their devices. You can just say use Android but that is also fraught with compromises as well.

Apple: I can install whatever I want on my laptop, why can’t I do the same on my phone?

You want Apple to give you some software that lets you do that without restriction. They don’t want to. So if you want to do so without restriction you’ll have to make your own software - as in, literally replace the entire software stack, rom/os/drivers with software that does what you want.

Good luck with that, but don’t blame the device - the object you bought and own - for your failure to be able to.

Apple does it, and it seems to work fine for them.

There's a company called transmeta that tried this. It didn't work well. Apple is big enough that major software vendors will deal with it.

I assume that isn't allowed by Apple. EDIT: It appears that it might be (or something functionally equivalent) -- see the post by bhaak.

You can on all of Apple's platforms.

You can, but it is a hassle, and Apple certainly could have made it easier.

Is this legally possible without software piracy? Can you link me to instructions? Does apple have documentation anywhere?

Apple supports it. I'm doing it right now.

It’s an option on iPads, surely Apple has the ability to work out a way of making this work?

Apparently not.

Except Apple are kind of notorious about avoiding cross platform compatibility which is why I ask. Find them hard to trust at this point.

I can already hear them making the “we can’t because it will impact users security” argument in my head.

Apple already has the capability to remotely install software on your phone.

That's irrelevant. Apple doesn't offer that option so discussing something that doesn't exist right now makes no sense.

Actually all of those can be done at the hardware level, but I'm pretty sure that aint the way Apple is doing it, so yeah has to be software.

I believe that still requires the use of Apple’s servers.

Yep, that's pretty much what I've described, and it is the reason why I'm certain that there's no technical limitation at play here. Apple just chose to not allow this for political/strategic reasons.

Apple does not.
