This is what I find the most surprising. I was under the impression that ChatGPT was still "research" and wouldn't be ready for prime time for a while. These rushed products that don't live anywhere near up to the hype seem like they will sour public opinion on it.
That's because ChatGPT was able to sustain service past the point of mass adoption. You're not going to scale to millions of users in a short timespan with dedicated hardware.
What's the most interesting to me is that ChatGPT is not much better than Davinci has been recently. The hype is all down to the improved 1st party UI that mimicks a chat room. The old playground or API interfaces have a barrier to entry that's just enough to keep the magic hidden from the general population.
When ChatGPT first arrived, it felt amazing and revolutionary. Since then it's been so neutered that while still feeling pretty cool, it's settling into gimmick level :( .
It's just arrogant to name an era after your own product you haven't even released yet. Let it speak for itself. ChatGPT's release was far more humble and didn't need hyping up to be successful.
