That's assuming there is a way to have equality without pulling everybody down to some moronically bad level. That's the only way I've ever known equality to work.
Equality of outcome is the most destructive idea ever. All those tens of millions who died at the hands of the communists for this one terrible idea. That we can remake society and people to force a certain outcome. So many injustices have been excused, because the ends somehow justify the means to achieve equal outcomes.
Equality of opportunity has done so much good, but the mob is easily swayed by the siren call of equal outcomes for all.
You can make everyone equal (and thereby eliminate "status") by making everyone worse off. For a lot of things that's exactly the choice society makes.
When you treat equality as equality of outcome, you necessarily destroy:
1. Equality of effort.
2. Equality of opportunity.
3. Equality of personal freedom.
4. Equality of justice.
All of these are the right ones to defend while accepting equality of outcome will necessarily force you to embrace behavioral engineering: the industrialization of being manipulative at scale. Basically the wet dream of every power grabbing seeker and wannabe authoritarians in disguise.
