that’s strange. every EU-related thread I’ve ever seen has had highly ranked comments poo-pooing whatever it is they’re planning to do.

what’s your position on the EU? perhaps I notice the negative comments more because I’m very pro-EU, and vv for you?

sort by: page size:

You'll notice that pretty much anyone with a negative opinion of the EU will be down voted here.

I don't see any of these comments. Could it be that you are disingenious? pro-EU sentiments seem to attract the biggest turds. I say this as an unfortunate member of our bureaucratic european union.

It's honestly got to the point where I barely open comments related to EU projects any more. While most of the time there's somewhat nuanced discussions in comments, once the EU gets mentioned for some reason most of the comments basically boil down to "EU bad, US better", and "Big government bad", completely ignoring the actual contents of what the post it about.

The conversation here is really degrading, when EU is mentioned. People down vote for the sake of down vote every opinion that is not in favor of EU, so they can silence it?

It is really disappointing to see such behavior here on HN.

I'm not sure if you read my comment? But like I said, on the national level (for example France in the link you posted) I remember hearing some negative comments, but on the EU commission level (the institution that sits in Brussels), I don't remember hearing anything explicitly negative.

Happy to be proved wrong though.

Why is it that most of your comments are talking shit about EU? I'd understand if you were living in the EU and frustrated with your life, but given that you're not don't you have anything more interesting to think about? Regardless of how much merit there is to your statements, it's a bit strange that's the one thing you talk about.

It's pretty amusing how a lot of people that really don't like the EU and speak against it here are not from EU.

The odd part is that these bad takes seem to typically come from people that don't even live the EU, and don't understand how it works.

They just don't like that it exists.

because this is a thread about EU policies?

I don't necessarily agree but the immediate downvotes anyone receives for questioning the EU's pure intentions is interesting.

People are either extremely trusting of huge global governments or we're being brigaded.

Also, I'm pretty sure people are talking about the EU here, not Europe.

I rarely comment on EU because of that. It seems like EU has its own brigade of "Brussel trolls"

It's obviously true, but you will be karma-whacked on this forum for criticising the EU. It's full of people who think the EU is the solution to every problem, and never the cause.

It’s intriguing to observe this phenomena on HN where any posts critical of the EU will get downvoted, even though it is natural for any country or block to try various means to show or enforce its power.

And before someone says otherwise, I’ve seen this playing out hundreds of times.

It saddens me that any opinion that doubts the grand federal EU is almost automatically downvoted, regardless of the nature of said opinion.

If you read their tone, EU political integration is a negative aspect.

I'm saying that a) it was always the plan and b) it's good.

One interesting thing about Euroscepsis is, to my unscientific observations, that it is pretty well represented in all layers of society. There's plenty anti-EU people of all levels of educations, family backgrounds and vocations. Their reasons wildly vary, though, and those might coincide more with particular groups.

This is not to say that all these people also vote for the populist anti-EU parties, which typically have a broader populist agenda (e.g. EU bad and muslims bad)

Nevertheless, this makes it obvious that there's also plenty of anti-EU folk on HN, simply because there's plenty Europeans here. Especially in a thread with the word 'Europe' in the title, I'm not surprised.

You are misinformed, according to the regularly performed Eurobarometer polls (http://ec.europa.eu/public_opinion/archives/eb/eb82/eb82_en....), there is not a single poll since 2006 where more people had a negative view than a positive view of the EU.

Funny that you say that because it's precisely what I've noticed and been saying, having moved to Europe because of all the great stuff mentioned on the internet and realizing it's not as great as people would have you believe.

What's weird is every time I've brought it up, either my comment gets buried or a bunch of excuse makers jump in and say "it's not like that, it's just you..." Not until very recently have I noticed other people talking about the lovely EU propaganda and not getting buried.
