These were definitely based in history, but they definitely played some things up for TV entertainment. Like suspense of finding something, then cutting to commercial. The closest I can think of in modern times might be Expedition Unknown (on Discovery), but if that were live and on NBC. I wish I could think of what they might have been called, this was early 90s.

There was a T.V. show based on that.

There was a show on discovery for a while that followed some preppers. Watched the first season. Some of the stuff that the people did was cool, but some of the other things was a little out there for me

There was a modern series that had a X-Files vibe to it for me called "Debris"

Sadly it was on NBC so it was doomed to be cancelled

All historical dramas are just prequals to The Detectorists.

The tv show Lost was really good at using the commercial breaks for tension building.

A couple I'd recommend:

1. Mr. Robot: It's a show about a psychotic hacker, and many of the tools and programs used on the show are real.

2. Halt and Catch Fire: A show that follows a group of men and women during the early computer boom in Texas during the 1980s.

Don’t forget Twin Peaks. Another 90s classic mystery show.

this sounds pretty excellent. i wish some advertiser had suggested this to me when burn notice was still on the air.

Another recommendation is "Person of Interest". The series was ahead of its time with the implications of AI on society. It also has spies.

Reminded of Person of Interest

Pretty entertaining show actually.

How about watching a re-run of the X-files? Apart from the little green men and the reoccurring monster, it seems rather tame in this day and age.

Secret courts, secret prisons, bit of wiretapping, all part of everyday life.

There is a dramatic series made just for WGN-TV called Manhattan. Its about life in Los Alamos during the bomb development times. Its about spies, counter-spies, bored horny housewives and bomb development. it was more interesting in the beginning, but has bogged down in subplots.

Dramatized in the first season of Halt and Catch Fire. That show is a mishmash of all lore from that era.

Or, more recently, Netflix's Travelers.

Continuum was a good show. I particularly liked the whole "Corporate Congress" motif - seems eerily realistic these days.

Maybe we should have TV shows like this, I can't help but feel anything that gets the general public a bit more aware about how this stuff really works and makes them more suspicious about "bad" practices is a net win. Not to mention that if it had some pretty good writers it would make for quite compelling TV. I'm thinking something in the Crime genre, maybe like CSI?

Heck, I'd watch it! I might learn something =D...

This reminds me of a very recent TV series

A bit like Lost (TV Series)

The tv show Person of Interest was great in this regard.

"The Americans" is not only a great classic TV series but has lots of examples of cold-war era tech and planning complex missions.
